Tell me about Merc MLs

What car?

Tell me about Merc MLs

Post by foo @ Wed Nov 19, 2014 12:29 pm

Since it was mentioned in the Jag thread, who knows about older MLs and why are they lots to run? What's a lot to run?

I had thought of getting the other half an MX5, but then thought an ML would be better for longer journeys down to my parents' etc. So what I'm after is a 4x4 thing (I occasionally have to drive on green lanes in the middle of nowhere when marshalling events but nothing proper off road), with some toys and comfort.

What does anyone think?

How old? The first generation is based on a sprinter van, they are very heavy and thirsty (even the diesels). budget for annual repairs is almost impossible to predict, but an occasional bill worth the same as the car isn't unusual.

My sister had a 7 seater one for about 5 years and little went wrong on it.

Probably looking at a 2005 model 270, 2006 at a push (which is the facelift I believe), I don't really want to spend more than 7K. I didn't know the first iteration was based on the Sprinter!

Even the early ones are still nice to drive, in a this feels like it could just drive over other puny cars way.

That suits me. What goes wrong with them, and what are those massive bills you mentioned?

The worst is the transmission fluid heat exchanger failing meaning coolant in the gearbox and gearbox replacement needed. My B in L had one for a while and every time it was serviced (MB main dealer) he was looking at a €2 to €3k bill, again just anecdote.
ETA- But they did score low in JD power surveys, especially American built ones.

Oh blimey, I can well do without that. I hate cars, they keep you poor.

I've also just read about main crankshaft bearings failing after oil changes.
