Well I have just been diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis (AVN) in both hips. Woke up a few weeks ago in complete agony from my left hip - made worse by my neuroligical issues causing the muscles around the pain point area to go into spasm, and making the pain even worse. Not ashamed to say I was screaming and crying at home - by far the worse pain I've ever experienced and given the plethora of procedures I've had, that's saying something.

Called an Ambulance (a first for me) but they wouldn't come as it wasn't deemed an emergency (despite me literally not being able to move without the pain) - fortunately a mate with a car and keys to let himself in was around so was able to help me up and to A&E. Anyway, after some morphine and codeine and an x-ray they decided to send me home, but with an MRI booked a few days later...

....which led to the AVN diagnosis. Essentially there's not enough blood flow to the hip joints and the bone at the top of the femur is dying. I gather blood flow to that region isn't great at the best of times, and the suspicion is that all the steroids I took when I first went in with the leukaemia has made it a lots worse.

Anyway, waiting to see a hip specialist to see what can be done. Having done some background reading, they can basically go in and drill holes in the bone I think to improve blood flow and hopefully save the bone, possibly bone graft too. If left, the joint can collapse and I guess a hip replacement is then the solution.

Fun times ahead!

Thanks. It’s fine now although I had a slight twinge yesterday but I’m just keen to speak to a specialist and get a proper prognosis. I have no desire to have a repeat of that 24 hour pain-fest again.

fcuk, GN, that sounds wretched. I am sorry to hear it. I hope things get better for you.

Without wanting to trample all over GN’s news, which is undoubtedly worse, I have something of a double whammy. After several years of pretty much constant hay fever/cold type symptoms (coughing, sneezing, breathlessness, asthma-like issues, dodgy throat, lots of minor bugs and infections) I have been diagnosed as having a hiatus hernia. This is basically a hole in my oesophagus which shouldn’t be there. The good news is that it can be fixed via keyhole surgery and it will mean I won’t need to take omeprazole any more and I can exercise without wheezing.

At the same time as all this, I tripped over a drain cover on my way to work and hurt myself quite badly. I haven’t been able to breathe without it hurting, I bruised my hand a lot and bashed my knees up. Anyway, after a week, I went to A&E because my hand was swelling up again and it turned out it was broken so they put it in plaster. For six fcuking weeks. I was about to fly to Sweden for a long weekend and the hospital doom-mongered that I would probably lose my hand and they wouldn’t allow me to fly or even give me a certificate. Fortunately, that was all bollocks and I am currently in Kiruna enjoying a beer with a full complement of hands.

I posted a pic of my hand on Facebook and got some comments which were pretty insulting from a couple of people who I had previously considered to be friends. So I was quite upset and sort of did a flounce in my head and thought ‘well, fcuk you all’. Also because when I tripped over and was clearly in distress and pain, no one stopped to help me and people literally just walked past as I tried to pull myself up. So I’ve gone through a bit of a phase of hating everyone.

Anyway. That’s what’s been going on.

Ok guys, form up in two lines here. We've got a double cupping needed. Anyone cupping GN form up on the left, over on the right for CIS4.

CIS that’s horrible, hope they don’t hang about and sort you out sharpish, and that your hand mends soon

GN that’s proper fcuking horrible. I hope they can fix you without being too invasive.

Hiatus hernias are fairly easy to live with. Currently on my second one which has been around for over 20 years. It’s actually the sphincter (Fnarr!) at the top of your stomach that has weakened to allow part of the stomach lining to poke through. The op basically tightens your sphincter again (fnarr!). Although the effects of the op do wear off over time hence me having one again (first one was fixed as an infant)

Also sorry about your hand CIS.

No colonoscopy. Just a friendly finger and chat with the GP, and some blood tests.

I don't actually know the full extent of what they looked for in the bloods, only the PSA test. And the bonus irritating cholesterol result.

Night sweats is not a new thing for me, and I've suffered on and off for months. But I've always put it down to work stress tbh.

I certainly wouldn’t accept the tests you’ve had given your symptoms. Your GP definitely needs to know about these new symptoms and consider whether you need further investigation for possible inflammatory diseases as well as other things. A gastroscopy and assessment of your small bowel seems necessary.
Referred for gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Exciting times ahead for my innards!

Biggest cups for GN. That sounds genuinely awful and I'm even going to warm my hands first, that's how bad it is.

Big cups for CIS#4. I saw the hand picture and it was super-ouchy. Sorry CIS#4, all the warmth has been used up on GN. Cold hands for you!

Generous cups for DT. That would have me worried.
