FIAT 124 Spider- driven

Post by Il Duce @ Tue May 16, 2017 10:56 am

I went to Italy for the day on Sunday and booked a FIAT 500 595 Abarth with Avis. Unfortunately it wasn't ready when I arrived so I was offered a 124 Spider as a free upgrade. The forecast was good so who would say no to flinging a spider around twisty mountain roads in glorious sunshine?

First the good bits.
It looks lovely. It really sounds like an original 124 spider. Incredible how they've done that!

Now the bad bits.
I'll start with the wind noise.. even with the roof up it's too loud at 130kph. As I had 1:30 of motorway to do before the twisties this was a big pain... nearly as much as the pain in my back from the shit lumbar support, something I'd experienced in an MX5 my nephew owned a while back so not surprising as it's an MX5 underneath.
On to the twisty bits. Roof down, sunglasses on, MAXIMUM ATTACK! What. The. Fvck? Throw it into a bend and it starts to flex like a chinese contortionist whore being electrified. No feeling from the steering either. Dead. My S3 feels like a single seater compared to this. I can't get any feedback. Oh hang on, that's the least of my worries, I've just hit a few bumps mid bend and the traction control is flicking enough to warrant a warning for epileptics in the handbook. Back off. Things calm down. Try again. Same result. Right, new strategy, 6/10ths attack. Sort of just slightly quick cruising. This works but I'm now driving like a girl or a very old man.

I stopped for petrol on the way back to airport and the attendants admired the car as they're very rare in Italy due to the price. They asked all about it and I explained its deficiencies. The older man scratched his chin and said "so it's like a whore that will only suck your cock"

Exactly. My review summed up in one line.

I am surprised, and disappointed. I'd have thought that masked on the MX5 it was really just a tarty frock on the top? How can it drive so differently?

I agree.
KM posting one word, then crossing it out like a spoilt child without explanation is such a let down.

Are you still talking about the Fiat? Or is this one of those 'prostitute review' things?

You've disappointed your mother.
Go to your room and think about what you've done.

A friend has the Abarth version, still not had a go but he seems to be very pleased with it - I'll report back when I have more information.

Perhaps I'm just too old for it.
