Do you enjoy wearing a suit?

Post by Paul H @ Tue Jan 14, 2020 2:43 pm

For decades I used to wear one Monday to Friday, but now I only put one on for weddings and funerals. I just don't feel comfortable or at ease in a suit. Obviously I look magnificent in my finery but that doesn't give me solace. Or comfort, especially comfort. Is it just me? or should the suit be consigned to the past, as relevant to today as a top hat or spats?

Thought about when I last wore a suit and realised I wear black tie more often than a business suit nowadays

Never thought that would be the case

A good suit enhances the figure of a man (or woman), either you are lucky and standard sizes fit well, or you get one tailored to fit and flatter. The only problem is they aren't machine washable, but I feel good wearing a suit, more confident than when I'm wearing some athleisure ensemble, which might be marginally more comfortable.

I very rarely wear a suit, or even a tie, but I do like it when I do. The only downside is that it seems to be increasingly associated with funerals.

Not really.
The last suit I bought did 4 funerals and 1 wedding.
In 1 year.

I haven't worn a suit at work in 20 years, but I do like to wear them, and there's the advantage of always knowing what to wear each day.

Suits? Horrible bloody things.

Pointless stupid fcuking noose tied around your neck
Scratchy uncomfortable trousers
Long sleeves with rigid cuffs
An obligatory carpety coat over the whole lot which you don't need because we have central heating these days but it's still there
And anything you can't wash when it gets dirty is unfit for purpose as clothing because all clothing gets dirty and needs washed so then you're fcuked.

One of the great things about not being at school any more is nobody can make you wear the things and if they try you can tell them to fcuk off.

I haven't had to wear one to work for nearly 30 years so don't mind slipping one on occasionally now.
I have black, which I bought mainly for the jacket to wear with jeans and a blue which I got married in (2018 not the doomed 2001 wedding).
I refuse to wear a tie though, hate them, always have.

I hate putting a suit on but once I'm wearing it I generally do enjoy it. I don't find them uncomfortable once they're on, and they look good.

Also more often than not when I'm wearing a suit it's for a fun occasion.

I like wearing a suit. I often forgo the tie these days, though, for all but the most formal occasions.

That’s like literally no suit I’ve ever worn.

This, though I don't have to wear them anywhere near as often as I used to and as a result I only have two, which is a shame because I love the process of getting fitted and all that jazz.

Resolves to get new suit regardless of the fact I have no need for another one at present.

I've never had to wear a suit to work, but I did used to wear a shirt and tie. Not now. But I don't mind wearing a suit at all, it feels smart and comfortable and gives you a bit of extra gravitas (so long as you're not making a court appearance, or a 19 year old selling something). I don't know what sort of suits you've been wearing Pidge, but like CJ says - I think they might be shit ones.

I agree with Pidge a bit here. Ties are largely pointless since they invented the button, and are definitely a bit noose like. Shirts definitely have long sleeves with rigid cuffs and you can't just bung your suit in the wash.

Having said that, I don't mind wearing them.

Is it just me that finds little kids wearing suits, bloody awful?

Fortunately not.
Wedding was my niece's, probably my last as all of my friends are married and if you aren't married with kids you don't get invited to their kids weddings.
Funerals were all parents of my friends.

90's and 00's were all about the suit 'n' tie in a business setting. Not necessarily in the office but certainly for external meetings. 10's and 20's, all 15 days of it, has relaxed a lot. I tend to wear trousers, plain shirt and a jacket, not matching but complementing. Rarely wear a tie here for meetings but in Germany they still seem to so I default to their setting. Likewise some of my clients are old school and I'll match their level of formality.

Did anyone get those Xmas or birthday gifts of a Next matching shirt and tie from well meaning relatives? Godawful things like this. They seemed to be everywhere in the 00's and coupled with a Topman shiny suit it made everyone look like a junior estate agent.

Well I did.

It was a requirement of the school, and it came from Horrids, so presumably not supposed to be shit, but it was. Fortunately I wasn't at that school very long, but even so, three years where the simple process of getting dressed is a downer for the whole day and the happiest event of every day is the moment of sublime ecstasy when I finally get to take the fcuking thing off again is pretty effective conditioning against ever going near them again.

Haven't worn a suit in decades.

I think the only trousers I have now are jeans. I just don't ever need to dress well anymore, which is great!

But no, I hate wearing smart clothes.

I used to wear suits daily, but was forever ruining the trousers by catching them on things when visiting building sites, so ended up with loads of jackets which I couldn't get trousers to match.

Eventually, with the addition of some portliness and ageing, I could get away with wearing those sort of jean cut trouser things from the likes of M&S which are much harder wearing and look passable with a jacket. However, that more casual approach to work meant the old jeans and jacket routine for the weekend didn't feel right, so weekends descended into jeans and hoodies.

Then I started working from home mostly, meaning I spend a lot of time in jeans and hoodies and am basically one step away from becoming a tramp.

To wear a suit now would feel as out of place as a pink tutu.
