Denim!

Post by Damien Thorn @ Sat Apr 23, 2016 1:30 pm

I'm into my jeans, as you well know. I read about artisan denim and beardy Hoxton selvedge, and subscribe to the daily Heddels email for fade of the day.

So instead of writing jeansy things in Peek's general thread, I'm starting this thread to blather inscrutably about vintage Japanese looms and crotch blow out and interesting (?) webs and etcs.

And about an experiment that I'm starting today. I've just bought some new jeans: slim straight indigo selvedge with a button fly and some minor incidental detailing. I don't know the weight as there's no label to clue me up, but from feel I'm guessing they're around 11oz - less certainly than my 13oz 1969s but definitely still rigid.

Look:

And here they are in comparison to my 9 month old one-wash 1969s:

Image

So what's the experiment?

Well. They were seven pounds fifty. Can I brew up a half-decent pair of jeans for £7.50? Dunno. Let's see. I'll be simultaneously pleased/surprised and disappointed if so (but I won't be wearing them "for best").

I'll maintain this as a bargain build thread, but also this can be the dustbin where we throw all our jeans and jacket posts about denim.

Three blue and one black.

e: the black are well old now though and faded to a dreary grey. And I'm including today's experiment jeans in the three blue.

£7.50 with a coin pocket ID. Nice details.

I'll add my denim stuff here later.

It's just ridiculous! I'll be absolutely furious of they turn out any good. Furious, and delighted.

Delirious, if we're still ever doing that.

Where did you get them, Damo? £7.50 for selvedge is insane and I quite want in on this. They look nice! I particularly like the sort of paisley pocket linings and the white bit at the top of the condom pocket. Shame about the button fly but I could live with it.

Good thread, btw.

You can see from the picture they were reduced from £25, which is still a preposterous price. I saw them by sheer accident, with the last handful of various sizes on the sale rail in Sainsbury's.

I can only imagine it was a dropped marketing ball, because they don't have them in the current range and who on earth buys £25 jeans in Sainsbury's anyway? That's actual shop shop money for jeans - like Next or something - so I imagine they bombed horribly in a supermarket environment and the poor lad who'd enthused about a booming selvedge interest at the meeting table has been whipped back down to the in-store bakery or clean up in aisle six.

However: the cut is alright and they fit me well. I chanced a 32x30 when I would've preferred a 32x32 - but it's all that was left. It means they're actually the right length instead of leaving stacked fabric to turn them up with. The stitching seems neat and even, but the design seems less resolved than more expensive jeans I've had. There are a few loose threads and the back pockets seem extravagantly large. But they seem genuinely as good as my first practice toe-in-the-selvedge-water pair of H&M slim tapered jeans that don't even fit as well as these new ones. I'll wear them for the garden and work round the house, and probably for slumming, and just see what happens.

Here's a link. Nifty one-star review, complaining that raw selvedge jeans shrank when washed.

 at the review, but I feel sorry for him and would have also have been pissed off in his situation had I not known that's what raw jeans do.

Do you need a zip you wimp?

The buttons on the fly of my Unbranded pair are so sturdy they set off metal detectors. When it sets off the archway and they rub the handheld device over me I've perfected the eyebrow raise as it reaches my crotch and goes wild.

I feel a whelm of disappointment if I'm looking at jeans or trousers and discover a zip fly. Ever since 501s rekicked off in about 1984 I suppose.

Three observations after half a day of wear trying out the experimental jeans:

- they have quite a high rise. Not dad jean-esque, but higher than my others. There's possibly half an inch in it, which is enough to keep a tucked-in t shirt tucked in, if I was that way inclined.

- quality is poorer than it looked at first glance. I pulled the leg up to lace up my boots, and as I bent my leg slightly several of the stitches down the outside seam popped. Weak.

- they shed indigo like a mf. I had this piece of paper in my back pocket for half an hour:

Image

and the white shirt I was wearing now has blue cuffs just from me resting my hands on my legs as I was sitting down. Nuts. Astonishing that the jeans are still even blue. They are though.

On my latest pair the indigo simply falls off it. I dropped some food into my lap the other day and used a baby wipe to clean it off and although I barely touched the denim the wipe turned dark blue.

I expect your UBs to end up looking like this, which is a pretty devastating (yet apparently typical) UB fade:

Anything else and you'll just be letting us all down.

ps: every time I've washed my hands today, the water is going blue. Ridic!

Right, I love jeans but can never get them to fit properly, they always seem to be an inch too big around the waist and then an inch too short on the leg.

Where can I get good jeans in a decent range of wait/leg combos?

On the high street, Gap do sizes in 1" increments.

Cletus was the policeman who laughed "yurk yurk yurk". He was never seen in DoH wearing anything but his police uniform.

Maybe Moog is talking about the unsuccessful spin-off series featuring Cletus on his days off? He would always climb up a tree (wearing his jeans and white T-shirt) to watch Daisy in the shower. In one episode he fell out and dislocated his shoulder and they cut to a young blonde boy saying "Oh, Cletus!" which became his catchphrase and haunted the rest of his disastrous acting career.

Hmm. They're inconsistent: one inch increments from 30" to 34", but two inches beyond that. You're not a fatty, are you deuts?
