A trainer adventure

Post by thekungfury @ Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:02 am

I saw a pair of trainers I quite liked on a promotional email from a website. Here they are. You don't have to like them, that's fine.

I followed the link and the result will astound you.

(Next instalment to follow shortly to try and create suspense)

The website didn't have them. Not even sold out, just using a completely different banner image to suck you in. Bastards.

Undeterred I did a reverse image search. No joy.

Further undeterred I looked on the Puma website. Still no joy.

Can you decipher that scribble underneath the PUMA writing on the side? I couldn't, yet. More in the next episode of Trainer Adventure...

I am intrigued as no kind of search produces these trainers. Almost like they have never existed. It shouldn't say 'clyde' it should say "Kaiser Soze"

Yeah, it says Clyde. Apparently named after Walt "Clyde" Frazier, a basketballer from the 70's.

No, it's not that integrated sock thing. Those are the closest colour I could find too but clearly not buying those monstrosities!

Armed with the name Puma Clyde I set about searching everywhere. Google was hit with Puma Clyde blue, Puma Clyde navy, Clyde navy, Puma Clyde navy suede. Nothing.

Ready to give up I searched Puma Clyde navy on Twitter. Someone had a different pair to the design I was looking for but they'd written in their tweet "New kicks in Peacoat (navy)"

I had the name of the colour. I had taken one step further.

If you're playing along at home you've probably googled "Puma Clyde Peacoat" and found plenty of pictures and links to buy. We've done it!

Uh-oh...

Links are either broken, shoes sold out or they're different designs. But wait, even though one link is broken Google's cache has the text "Puma Clyde - Made In Japan Peacoat"

Made in Japan!

Let's delve deeper, shall we?

Dear Google. Clyde Made In Japan, please.

A link to End Clothing. I've bought from them before so know they legit.

It's the exact shoes!

They're in stock!!

They're on sale!!!

They're in size 6 (opposite of exclation mark)

Crushing defeat.

Loads of other links though. Not to places selling but websites reviewing them. Websites which get a proper hard on for limited edition trainers with names like High Snobiety, Hype Beast, Freshness Mag and Kicks On Fire.

I'm starting to realise a) these are super rare and, b) super nerdy. I've begun to like them less now and decide to give up. Or have I?

Realised it wasn't clear there. Hype Beast etc. are the websites https://hypebeast.com/2008/5/puma-clyde-mu-made-japan

They blog about the achingly cool things I'm too old for. Hype!

I think you're wrong Teeks.
Wearing supercool nerdy trainers without caring about their kudos is acceptable.
Then kids say "Wow, are those Japan Nacy Clydes?" and you just shrug and say "No idea mate. Just trainers" and they say "Wow, how cool is it that you have those and don't even care?"

"I can forgive failure, what I cannot forgive is not trying" RIP Nelson

"There is no try, there is only do or do not" RIP Dumbledor

But which of these fictional characters is right?

So I remember from reading one on the shoe threads on PH that some trainerverts buy trainers and keep them in a box rather than wear them. They'll then flog them on eBay, often for a profit when it comes to rare editions.

So, off I trot I type eBay.co.uk into my browser and look for Puma Clyde Made In Japan Peacoat. Ho. Ly. Shit! An actual pair of the actual shoes in the actual box with actual original tags in the actual size that my feet actually are!!!

OMG!

Buy It Now or Best Offer with 6 watchers.

You won't believe what happened next.

Correct and frankly insane.

The guy on eBay was offering them for £50 buy it now or best offer (plus £5 p&p)

It left me torn. Yes, it's a huge discount from the original price but I'd never pay that so irrelevant. However I've come this far now and I'd be crazy not to buy them. However however I reckon I could get the price down seeing as what are the chances of someone wanting and finding this exact shoe and having feet that size? However however however there are 6 other watchers.

Sod it, bid £40.

Now, we wait.

That bid was on Saturday night. We're now Sunday lunchtime and had no response.

What would you do? Hold your nerve or just buy them for the asking price?

Buy them, what's a £10 difference matter when you've travelled this far?
