Dark theme

Post by stuart @ Sat Oct 14, 2017 2:26 pm

I like my sites to use dark themes, but I can't see any dark theme for CTF.

I've found a Sylish.org theme for PHPbb and I'm using that. It looks quite good:

Pidge, any chance of installing an actual dark that we can configure on a per user basis ? Rather than using Stylish plugin?

I’m always surprised that people use themes and skins and stuff. There isn’t a single application I use where I’ve ever had it setup any differently from how it comes out the box.

What’s the point of them?

I find it much less strain on my eyes if I have dark themes.

I have to theme all my stuff that I use regularly for work to make it darker. Staring at white screens all day doesn't work well for me at all. THen when I spend most of my time on the computer and everything is dark and nice and not giving me headaches, it's annoying when the sites i use regularly are bright white.

It annoys me that I cant make the office tools like Word / Excel have dark backgrounds.

You know how you like the sound of vinyl even though it's technically inferior to CD?

That, pretty much.

Also, the thing stuart said about easy on the eyes etc.

Even though I reckon Stuart's picture looked smart, I was on the point of agreeing. When I suddenly realised this:

which sort of suggests I like dark themes anyway.

It’s not really apples and apples though...

I listen to music for pleasure but websites and programs are just something that are there that I need to use. It’s like wanting to change the colour of your lawn or something.

I get the headache/eye strain thing though - that makes more sense.

I suppose I’m expressing mild surprise that the look or colour of computer stuff registers at all with people. I’ve never really noticed what colour programs etc are:

I did, but from the reading the website feedback forum it seems they don't pay attention to requests. So I made my own.

“To change the background color and design of all your Office programs, go to File > Account from any open Office program, and then click the drop down menu next to Office Theme. (Or, go to File > Options > General > Office Theme).”

You lazy bastard.

I tend to prefer light coloured pages because they're easier to disguise at work. But the main application we use at work is default dark screens and now I think about it, they are a bit easier on the eye.

Anyway, now that Apple has invented OLED displays (where you save lots of battery by having dark themes, because you need to illuminate far fewer pixels - in contrast to an LCD, where the backlight is running at the same intensity no matter what), you can expect dark themes on everything.

Didn't Elton John write a song about this "Saturday night's alright for comparing optional software skins' or something?
