Since I can't be arsed to look back through the thread, were the turbos new out of the box when fitted? It does seem worrying that one has gone already.....

Yeah they were new. Once I get it to bits I'll see what my options are. I'll be talking to the supplier about it once I'm 100% certain it's the turbo. They've been extremely helpful in the past.

I was thinking about this the other day when I saw the pics of Deuts' car and wondered if you'd ever finished it!

What year was it you came and got those wheels and tyres from me? :D

Paddock stand and tyres wasn't it? And it was 2010 i think. As for the car not quite yet - hopefully this will be slightly quicker and cheaper to sort than last time, but it has been off the road for 16 months already. Oops.

This has got to be CTF's most epic project hasn't it? (With DS's Sprazda in second place, but there are exceptional circumstances with that of course.)

Have just looked back at the first page of the thread and seen it is all about the hassle of getting the car to the pictured state in the first place. Are you simply very well practised at that by now, or have you installed a quick release so you just pull out a couple of big pins and the whole front comes off?

Basically very well practiced. Having said that i did manage to drain transmission fluid into the coolant bucket because i disconnected some pipes in the wrong order. That's what i get for thinking i could do this without checking on either some instructions or this thread first though. The next bit is the fun bit... pissing about underneath trying to get the exhaust and driveshafts off..

I haven't posted a thread on it, but my Westfield has been off the road for six or seven years I think - just for a bit of re-wiring, which was mostly completed six years ago...

I took the intercoolers off today. First the passenger side, which nothing fell out of, then the drivers side... which went less well, as this fell out...

Are intercoolers supposed to have oil in them?

No. They're supposed to have air in them

Eta: and definitely NOT oil.

Seriously though, are you running the turbos at any higher pressure than standard, because I've got a K04 and two intercoolers and I've never checked mine to see if they're full of oil.

I couldn't tell you what pressure i was running but definitely not stock.. unless you're getting smoke out the back i wouldn't worry about it - i was getting a lot of smoke and a massive reduction in power prior to taking this to bits.

What car do you have?

No smoke from mine thankfully.

I've got a first-gen Leon Cupra-R. It's got the same engine as an Audi S3, with an intercooler either side of the radiator down in the corners of the front bumper.

I wouldn't worry about it at all if there's no smoke. If it's a single turbo and you want to check then pulling any hose off either indercooler and giving the inside of the pipe a wipe with some white paper towel should show any oil up but it may just cause concern when none is warranted.

How many miles on it? My stock k03s lasted over 120000 amd had a fairly hard life from when i bought it...

Getting on for 125k now. Still seems to pull perfectly well.

It's the first and only turbo car I've ever owned and I've been surprised at how much stronger it feels on high octane fuel and in cold air. On an early winter morning it's noticeably stronger.

Mine runs very badly on anything other than premium fuel...

With your car i wouldn't worry in the slightest about the turbo unless it's showing symptoms. It's a very capable engine and in standard tune isn't going to be stressed much at all.

Things I have learned today...

Coolant tastes awful
Oil tastes awful
I can bench press a gearbox
Balance is critical when putting an engine and gearbox on a single axle trailer.

Aching all over but the engine is out

Conversely, Halfords' cherry flavour screenwash tastes awful. And is probably poisonous.
