Some words - cars

General car gossip.

Some words - cars

Post by Turntable @ Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:46 pm

Too dull to make a thread (although I did) and cary for the words thread.

Anyway, a bmw 420 went past me yesterday. I loved the look of it from every angle except the rear. See if you make the same observation

I like it, but the exhaust was the smallest exhaust I had ever seen and there was only one of them. It looked ridiculous. Like a 1980s Fiesta.

I hate the stupid fat nose and shitty bonnet shut line the 3/4 series has now because of the need to protect stupid people who run in front of cars from themselves.

I saw one of those new Lexus the other day that TT loves. Looks much better on the road than in pictures.

I thought they had invented the "4" nomenclature for the coupe, but the saloons/estates etc were staying as "3"s. Just to confuse old folks like me.

They do don't they? Plus the one we were looking at that had the garish grille at the front, we hadn't allowed for the fact that the grill didn't have a number plate on so it looks far subtler in the flesh

Is that the new IS?

I think they look tremendous.

I also like the new Mazda 6 styling too.

Why has my car gone more economical all of a sudden? I do the same commute in it every weekday, at the same time of day at about the same speed in the same sort of traffic. But where I used to see ~430-460 miles from a tankful, now over the last few tanks I've got 510-530 miles. I'm on track for possibly 550 from the fuel currently in the car, judging by the trip computer. And before you explain to me how inaccurate my trip computer is, know this: I usually use it to determine how much I can get away with before filling up and will happily drive on until it clicks over from 30-miles-to-empty to zero - and I've only run out of petrol once.

One of two things has happened there DAmo.

1)Your 10 year old car has invented a way for it to make itself 10-15% more economical without telling you, and has mad the relevant parts and fitted them itself whilst you were asleep or
2) THe fuel economy guage on your 10 year old car has become a little less reliable.

Almost certainly 1) I reckon, given your anecdote about empty fuel danger bingo

I don't trust the actual fuel economy gauge, but I do trust the odometer - and that's the bit that shows me how many miles I've done on my petrol. So I agree, 1).

It seems counter-intuitive I know. But discounting the trip comp completely, I'm still doing lots more miles on one tankful. I used to do fourteen or fifteen commutes on a tank, but now I'm managing 17 or 18 before filling up. If only jimbob was about to check my figures, did you bully him off while I was away?

How many miles has it done Datho?

My XC90 definitely became more economical when the engine was properly run in, and for that it seemed to be about 50 or 60k. I was told by wd40 that this is fairly normal
Not as noticeable as you are describing but 3 or 4 mpg

Also have you done anything at all to it in the last few months?
I think certain things can make a big difference with economy like badly inflated tyres or dodgy stuff

It's done 160,000 miles, so fully run in I expect. I have recently got quite attentive to tyre pressures I suppose, because I seem to have developed tyre paranoia and keep thinking they're a bit flat. They're only ever slightly wrong, but I probably put air in every couple of weeks.

And I fitted a new battery a couple of months(?) ago. And last weekend the car went into the dealer because there was a safety critical recall amid concerns over the brakes falling off. I laughed with the service manager about how critical could it be after ten years and 160,000 miles? And then I almost bought an Impreza WRX.

Which suggests that before your attentiveness they were getting pretty flat relatively? I think tyre pressures make the biggest difference to fuel consumption

Tyre pressures must be the biggest culprit here I think.

They were never flat flat. Just 0.1-0.2 low.

At my local Subaru main dealer. I can't link it though, it's sold now. I didn't buy it because I doubt even my magic right foot could coax decent fuel economy out of it on my humble daily commute.

moleamol wrote:Did you inadvertently go to a cheaper petrol station?

No, the same one. But it's nothing to do with cost - I'm just going further on a tank than I did before.

Less traffic on the roads over Easter meaning you're getting better mpg?

But I've done a week and a bit of commuting since Easter finished, and I'm on track for Best Tankful Ever!! I honestly don't know what's going on and I'm as sure as I can be that everything is pretty much equal with how it ever was. I'm delighted, ofc, but I was curious if there was some blaters explanation that I'm too thick to have realised.

Thoroughly enjoying the Audi A1 I hired.

Amazed by how late model every car on the road here appears to be, but looking at how cheap leasing, etc is can see why.
