Some words - cars

General car gossip.

The 69' Impala SS came in yesterday....thankfully undamaged (Unlike the last two which had strap dents on the rear quarter panels), apart from a few small dash crack it's in really nice straight condition. 427 Big block.

Anyone interested in a 2011 Jag XJ Portfolio....black, tan leather, fsh, 38,000 miles, been remapped too. 3.0d job...

Think it'd go up for £24k.

Mum's partner died a few weeks ago, so she's keeping the merc and selling this (although I think she should do it the other way round)

Guy on the phone......about the 1967 Merc that's advertised as a 'Restoration Project'.....
'I ain't worried about the drivetrain...I'm a mechanic, I'll sort that out....what worries me is the body and stuff.....'
'Did you read the advert?'
'Yeah.....so what's the chrome like?'
'Read the advert....it says that the chrome on the rear bumper is shot, the front is good'
'Ahh....what welding does it need?'
'Really?....you haven't read the advert have you?'
'Yeah!'
'Then you should know....I'm not about to get into a four hour conversation about body condition when I've stipulated that unless the buyer views the car it's down to them....if you are interested I'd strongly suggest you come and see the car.'
' Ok...I'll leave now....'

Ten minutes later....
'Why are you selling it?'
'Because that's what I do?'
'My wife wants to know if you are selling it because it's so bad you can't do it yourself?'
'No.....because that's how it works...I have other work on...this is in the way....it's just come in from the states and is for sale.......what are you implying?'
'Nothing......she also wants to know if you are a registered dealer.....before we hand over any deposit.....'
'No.......this is a hobby'
'Oh....ok....well all I want is a car I can chuck two grand at and use to get to work and back'
'You are wasting my time if you think for a fcuking moment this will be road legal with 2K spent on it.....you think this is a Fiesta? It'sa 50 year old car that requires restoration......not a set of godamn spark plugs and new tyres. FFS.......go and do your homework before you call me back with plans to waste more of my time coming up to see it.'

He's on his way apparently........

Turns up, kick tyres, gets on phone to mate wo is font of all knowledge....apparently. His mate starts asking questions that are obviously designed to make him sound clever (I can hear them on speakerphone) but in reality have little bearing on checking this model of car. As it is the wife has a chicken in the oven (not an euphemism) and it's a bank holiday evening. I help to get the motor turning over but there's a weak spark and no fuel.....at which point I remind him of his comment about being unafraid of the mechanical aspects. So he starts to go after the other areas....'chrome needs doing, window rubbers need replacing.....yes the floor is solid as are the sills....but the chrome....hmmmmm...'
I remind him the car is advertised as a PROJECT needing RESTORATION.....not a fcuking polish. An hour and one pissed off wife later he hands me the phone to talk to The Oracle regards the paperwork....this dick talks to me as though I'm some sort of Nigerian scammer still trying to sell a photograph, I take offense, especially after I've explained I have all the emails referring to taxes paid, NOVA, paperwork, Title doc etc........while The Oracle is still speaking I hand the phone back to the guy and tell him to get in his car and piss off.....deal's off. He looks shocked...tells mate he'll call back and hangs up. I'm starting to lock up the barn and he asks why....' If you think I'm going to listen to that fcuker for one more second you can forget it....I told you the story on the car, you obviously don't get it, neither does your mate. You've tried to find fault with the car and my description of it and can't so resort to any other method of trying to get it for fcuk all.....ain't going to happen. I've been brutally honest with you since before you even left your house.....I gave you the price, you don't like it that's fine but you've wasted my evening and pissed me off so please fcuk off now. The car is not for sale to you or your mate.'
He gets all apologetic and starts to defend his actions, I carry on locking up. Eventually I calm down a bit, he continues to apologise for his and his mates attitude. I ask him...'You either want it at the price I told you or you don't....if you do, then pay a deposit and pick the car up asap.....if not, Goodbye'
He bought it. I think.....but all I have is a deposit and the chances are he will back out once he gets home and she who has the testicles in his relationship tells him he can't have it anymore.
Fcuking spaz.....

Surprise ending, does he look like he'll ever fix it up, or will it just remain a 'project' one day to appear on Classic car rescue?

In all honesty the car would be a fairly easy resto by W111 standards. But he isn't going to be using it to get to work and back this summer for sure. If at all.....as the agreement was that he would pay the balance by Bacs on receipt of the emails confirming the Nova/Tax/Title info...and me cancelling the advert. All done....no contact.

I consider the auto an advantage, and I think it's lovely... in principle. But you'd think that for 6k they'd at least clean the interior properly. I'd want the original wheels back. And the rusty bumpers are incongruous next to the shiny paint, which makes me wonder what other rust is lurking where you can't see it. Given the tendency of Japanese cars of that age to dissolve in showers, I'd want to be credibly assured that it was both free of current rust and had been thoroughly subjected to modern rustproofing treatment.

Well, this was my Easter Sunday. My Landy pissed everything we did and then I broke it trying to pull a very stuck Disco up a very steep and muddy hill. I have a video of how stuck but my phone isn't backing it up for some reason.

That was long before it broke, it's doing what it's meant to there!

It broke trying to pull the Disco out in reverse, there had been heavy logging stuff in and the ground was just mush with massive ruts. We'd already been down so we should have just gone back down, ended up having to push him out bullbar to bullbar in 2wd on mine. I'm just hoping the diff isn't damaged. It's not too bad if it's a half-shaft.

Can't believe that the car's ok in those pics - looks properly knackered! Like his face I suppose - looks disabled but isn't officially.

Yes, it's actually being fantastic so as you say it's just like my face.

PS It's definitely something James Bond, it's like we found each other because we belonged together.

Laugh at actual freedom of information request.

What chance would a company specialising in the repair and servicing of diesel engines/pumps etc have of suing the govt now that they have done a turnaround on the issue of the fuel? If you had shelled out a fortune on equipment, premises and staff in order to fulfil the foreseeable need to service the technology but now were about to see your arse due to the loss of popularity, penalties imposed by certain councils, costs of fuel itself.....would one be able to take the government to court and stand any chance of winning in an event like this?

Check it soon Moles. I've seen diffs ruined by bits of snapped shaft ratting around in the oil. I'm not sure about yours as the design changed, but the older 10spline axles always used to snap shafts where they enter the planetary gears in the diff so left bits in the housing.

I'm assuming you're in FWD here, if you've lost drive at the front it could be a CV & those randomly jam the steering once they are in bits.

You could be onto something there, the steering didn't feel right after trying to pull him out. At the point of those articulation pictures it was totally fine and doing exactly what it should.

It was when a mate got stuck in this and I tried to pull him out it broke. Another mate has a garage so it's up on the ramps tomorrow evening. I might paint my sump guard while someone else fixes it.

Tell us more about your Landie, moles...

It's been ages since I had to drive one in winter so forgotten how uncomfortable/cold it was and want one again!

Are they dead cheap to fix like big Meccano sets or is it horrible when things break?
