Some words - cars

General car gossip.

Hoping to buy this today, if it isn't a complete nail. Rare colour combo. decent enough engine. Not too much money at £800 and the plan is to use it as a daily.....long termer....I think the e36 will perhaps be a better bet value wise but the poor build quality of the coupes (door cards, roof lining, window mechanisms, lights) make it hard to find a nice E36 in a good colour combo and engine size without spending daft money. I think the E46 is a better car with way better options and though it may take longer to attain any sort of classic status it should age and last better. I did find two E36's in same colour and engine size but at three times the money.

Dunno but I'd like to sue the government for all sorts.

Tax, for example. [/soov]

Yeah you're right.

I reckon it would be quite peaceful to drive. Like driving a coppice or bush perhaps. Or a hedge.

It's like something a badger would drive. Or a fox would.

No one?

Well fcuk you all very much.

The answer is £38k, which I find remarkable for a 5 year old Lexus. Yes it's fast and well-specced, but I had thought it might be, I dunno, £16k maybe.

I rather like the idea of it being £16k. I imagine it would be fast and quiet and reliable. Sadly it's £38k which is BANANAS.

It's like they understand the ingredients if a nice interior, but not how to blend them together to make a nice interior.

I think it's the plastic wood and the lack of design flair. Just get all the things you want and need and stick them on, job done.

I hate it when they do that.

Imagine getting that Lexus. Imagine explaining it to you wife.

"Oh yes it's a hybrid, dear. So it's kinder to the environment you see. And quiet. Very quiet. Fast too, but you wouldn't care about that. Oh and very well specced. Heated seats as standard, to keep your labia warm when I take you to John Lewis."

"And... um.... that's what it looks like inside. What? No it's completely different to your old Carina. It's got, um... well... a sunroof."

Are they dead cheap to fix like big Meccano sets or is it horrible when things break?

I'll do a proper thread when I can muster the arsedness. They are pretty uncomfortable and cold but you just need to stop being a massive baby. If you can be bothered fixing it yourself most things are really cheap, it's when stuff like the chassis start rusting away it gets expensive. Mine is broke but it still got me home after pushing my mate out in 2wd. When my Megane steering shit itself it was straight off the road.

It's like there are seven different teams who work on various areas of the dash. Then when they get together they have a fight about who gets to out what where.

That was long before it broke, it's doing what it's meant to there!

It broke trying to pull the Disco out in reverse, there had been heavy logging stuff in and the ground was just mush with massive ruts. We'd already been down so we should have just gone back down, ended up having to push him out bullbar to bullbar in 2wd on mine. I'm just hoping the diff isn't damaged. It's not too bad if it's a half-shaft.

Check it soon Moles. I've seen diffs ruined by bits of snapped shaft ratting around in the oil. I'm not sure about yours as the design changed, but the older 10spline axles always used to snap shafts where they enter the planetary gears in the diff so left bits in the housing.

I'm assuming you're in FWD here, if you've lost drive at the front it could be a CV & those randomly jam the steering once they are in bits.

You could be onto something there, the steering didn't feel right after trying to pull him out. At the point of those articulation pictures it was totally fine and doing exactly what it should.

It was when a mate got stuck in this and I tried to pull him out it broke. Another mate has a garage so it's up on the ramps tomorrow evening. I might paint my sump guard while someone else fixes it.

Have fun fixing it, they are nice n simple with big bits so its easy to see what goes where. If all the bolts haven't seized & snap of course...

That dash is basically the same as the LS430, which came out in 2001. Everything's in the same place and is just a slightly different shape. Ergonomically they are pretty terrible.

As to £38k, I think they were about £80k new weren't they? So yeah it's a strong for 5 years old, but it was never gonna be £16k at that age. Plus if mine's anything to go by it'll essentially look and feel like a new car if it's been looked after. Barring the front mats mine is still immaculate inside and it's got 14 years and 100k on it.

I hope it lasts better than mine, between advancing arch rot and a few niggly jobs needing done soon I'm seriously thinking about getting rid sooner rather than later

True Spasty, did the government ask this company to develop services for diesel car owners? Clearly not so I predict the court would say hard cheese, you pays your money and you takes your chance, not everyone is a winner, next please. If it was a worthwhile thing then I'd be more into it, but the evidence for particulates damaging people's respiratory systems has been around for decades now, so not a snap decision.

It's not a clearly defined colour, although a Dark Green the actual colour varies depending on which car you are talking about.

Also it is really Irish green, since when car racing was starting out; Italy grabbed red, France blue, the USA white, Germany Silver and the UK chose green because it was before Ireland had left the UK, so at that point it seemed a rational choice.

Germany used to be white (Dis don't worry, I'm talking about the country) until they worked out they could save weight by not painting the aluminium body and leaving it silver. Hence now silver.
