A barge. It’s a fcuking barge and as your resident traveller I’m frankly jealous. Caravans of the waterways, we call them.

Holy cow. I had to buy petrol at motorway services yesterday and it was 149.9 per litre.

One. Forty. Nine. Point. Nine.

That's literally 20% over the odds.

I think their excuse that they are open 24/7 doesn't hold water any more.

They have to pay a lot for the ground rent, those service stations aren't cheap to build, the most petrol I've ever bough at a motorway services is £10.

Not a boat but possibly boatish tenuously. I’ve said too much!

ID's £15K car challenge -

For just £3250 you could be the proud owner of an Austin Allegro Vanden Plas 1500 formerly the property of no less a personage than Leslie Crowther. As the advert says "Well what a crackerjack of a car we have here".

The car is said to be structurally and mechanically sound and in receipt of an MoT. As a top of the range Vanden Plas model you get leather and walnut inside and even a pair of fold-down picnic tables in the back of the car. The extra £11,750 within your budget should give you more than enough margin to deal with any cosmetic niggles.

I did exactly that when my BiL bought one - he sold it after not all that long and bought a stunning Granturismo - so he should thank me really.

I'm confused again. By BMW's range, unsurprisingly. I was behind a 440i this morning, when an M3 overtook us both.

"Hmm." I thought, "I wonder how much faster the M3 is than this 440? What engine does the M3 have now, anyway?"

And then my train of thought idly started through differences; 3 series is a saloon now, 4 is a coupé. But hang on, this 440 has got four doors. So how is that different from the 3 series? Is it just a styling thing, where you might prefer a sportier-looking small fast four-door BMW saloon?

Then I overtook the 440 as well, and noticed that it was badged 'coupé' on the C-pillar. Sigh. Simply put for a simple man, what's the difference now?

I have no idea Damo, I was recently confused by this myself

I had understood that the 3 series is 4 door and the 4 series is 3 door.

But, I'm sure I've seen recently an M3 with both 3 and 4 doors.

Equally confused.

Most likely the model naming bloke, lets call him Gunther, is being covered temporarily by a 3 year old work experience kid, lets call him Stefan. Stefan can't count very well, being only 3, so got confused with the idea of the 3-series having 4 doors and the 4-series having 3 doors. It's an easy mistake to make, if you're three. Gunther on the other hand is having time off work, having developed diabetes... because of far too many e-numbers.

There was a time where I'd know most manufacturers range inside out but I'm totally confused by BMW's range nowadays as there seems to be so much replication as you say.

I used to like the olden days when BMW and Mercedes had three or four cars which were basically small, medium and large and a coupé with engine sizes you could work out from the numbers on the boot. When I'm king I will make it be like the 1980's again but we'll still keep the internet and some of the other good stuff from now.

I'm now even more confused about BMW model ranges - here's a 6 series:

Image

It's a badly proportioned 4-door hatch/fastback - not a bloaty coupe.

None of it makes any sense anymore. Somebody make it stop.

I thought about leasinga BMW but I can't find out which of them come with 4 wheel drive.
You'd think all the X's would but some X1's don't ffs.
As for the normal models I have no idea.

They ARE Germans aren't they? All precise and that? It's as if the Italians are doing the badging after lunch.

X-drive means 4x4 on the non X cars. I’m certain if you looked on their website at the model you wanted, you’d be able to read if it was available in 4x4 or not but I’ll go and look.

Saw one of those today and thought it said 6 on it but immediately assumed I’d misread it.

Baffled.

After going through each model in the configurator:

Some X1's and X2's are not x drive. X3's and up are all 4x4.
1 series: you can only get x drive in the 5 door diesel
2 series: you can only get x drive in the 5 door diesel
3 series saloon: you can only get x drive in the 5 door diesel
3 series estate: you can it in some petrol and diesel models

From here up the range, it's the same as the 3 series estate.

Doesn't really make sense.

Porsche are doing a new version of the 935 based on the mechanicals of the GT2 RS. It's more an homage than a true successor because they're just making 77 cars to sell to collectors rather than an all-out racecar but it's still a pretty cool thing. I think I might love the wheels and tyres they've used.
