What makes you say that?

It looks like he's having to be very positive in selecting the gears rather than the stick finding its own way, and third seems to be a bit of a problem at 1.49.

It's twin turbo, sounds like straight cut gears in the 'box - everything is noisier in a stripped out car.

Hmmm, I'd not really say so, granted he did nearly miss 3rd though.

He's running a big-bearing Tremec T5 gearbox, same as the one I fitted to my SD1.

Fitted a boss into the air inlet for the air temp sensor:

Loom in place and 90% connected:

Trumpet base on:

Image

One of the fans was very noisy, turned out the person who'd fitted them hadn't connected the blades to the spindle correctly, was a pig of a job to remove as it'd chewed up the mounts. Got it apart eventually, repaired it and fitted the assembly back to the radiator and back in the car.

Image

Water system filled, the rest of the loom connected, coil pack fitted and HT leads on. I modified the existing throttle cable to fit:

Image

Not running yet as the throttle potentiometer turned out to be duff, horrible erratic signal. Bit of a pain as the twin plenum (twin throttle really) setup uses a differed unit to the later Rover V8's. So, will have to modify an adapter and use a later Range Rover throttle pot.

Yep, I've got high hopes - the diagnostic tools report that they are seeing all the sensors (I fcuking love how 2017 technology is now embedded in a 1979 car) and the fuel system pressurises perfectly, so it should fire straight up.

I wish I had an ounce of your get-up-and-go.

The car is looking great - can't wait to see it running.

Right, throttle pot..

You can't get the old one (on the left) anymore, it's unique to the Rover SD1 Injection system and the Twin Plenum setup was almost designed around it. Consequentially it's much easier to adapt the single plenum (single throttle body) to a later Range Rover type throttle pot.

Principally the old one is female, the new is male.

Image

First things first, a different connector is required, my newly built loom uses a 3 pin Junior Power Timer connector. Off with the old round pins and on with the JPT pins:

Image

Then new connector and make it look neat:

Image

I had an adapter for the single plenum knocking about, so I fitted it, threw away the middle bit and measured the insertion depth of the male part of the replacement unit.

Image

I used a tyre marker pen to cover the end of the new pot with paint, I then pushed it home in the new mount to mark where I needed to make a female slot in the D-shaft on the throttle body:

Image

Covered it up to stop the swarf getting everywhere:

Image

Then cut:

New throttle pot mounted:

Which means it was ready to start!

Little potter up and down the drive to test the clutch meant I could park it the other way around in the garage and not fill it up with exhaust fumes:

It started literally on the button.

Transgender plenum!

That must be incredibly satisfying to hear it running DT, good work. I'm in awe. :)

That's superb DT! Even though I know what you're capable of, I'm still stunned at the matter-of-factness when you do stuff like this: "the intersector feed wasn't long enough so I made a new one out of some rolled up old carpet slippers and immediately it now produces 400 bhp."

:D Thanks everyone, still a fair way to go yet - need to tidy the electrics and then sort out the things it needs for an MOT (horn, washer jets, hazards, lights etc)
