I parked in a multi storey with my daughter last week, and she was utterly delighted to see up through the glass sunroof that we had literally 50mm of clearance from the top of the Shogun to the ceiling.

She was delighted, and I was a bit puckered. How embarrassing would it have been to actually get stuck? Pretty embarrassing.

But, it tells me the wagon is 6' 1" high. No wonder I can't see the roof unless I look out of the bedroom window.

I need 8' of clearance to tentatively get in. PITA if I need to go into town in it.

This is how much height an extra fifty grand's-worth of SQ5 gets you:

Is height advantageous in the 4x4 world? Or is their a sort Hierarchy based on height?

I’m in the process of ordering an XC60 but it’s not a proper 4x4 and not especially tall I don’t think but I’d hate to think I’ve made some sort of height based error!

In truth, I only want it because it’s a nice place to sit and I assume it’s not much cop at all in extreme conditions.

Ground clearance when traversing hazardous terrain, but there is a payoff in terms of road manners. Hence serious off road adventurers modify them with lift kits to go even higher.

How tall are you IRL Damo? Is this whole height thing a new experience?

Dammo is so diminutive he actually needed blocks fitted to the pedals so he could drive that Shogun, but don't mock him about it OK.

XC60 seems lovely, well done.

As you know I like old skool 4x4s, and I derive not inconsiderable pleasure from lording it over very expensive SUVs in my bargain bucket clonker.

I like old ones too - my old shogun V6 was a monster! Proper Taliban-chic I felt. I just never noticed it’s height especially, and was curious if it was a ‘thing’ in the 4x4 world.

Only as strawman says, for 4x4s height means business - height comes from lifted suspension to allow larger diameter tyres, and the additional diameter there adds to it too.

So perhaps height is just visual shorthand for capability? The same as the GTi version of a hatch looks quicker because it's lower and wider.

Makes sense I suppose. I’m officially withdrawing/not entering the xc60 in any such contests as i don’t think it means business at all!

I wanted a Ford Ranger but it turns out ‘we’ actually wanted an xc60.

I still want a Ford Ranger even though I actively prefer the glazed rear cabin of an SUV to a truck bed. Weirdly, the Ranger transcends the big thingi don't like about it and still remains really ace.

They’re still quite cheaply finished inside though. Volvo are making the nicest interiors at the moment, IMO, and I spend a lot of time sitting in traffic so want something nice to sit in. I love pick ups but can’t think of any that are truly nice inside.

Maybe I’ll get one when Germany one day leaves me and wear a trucker jacket and become an earnest and hardworking but down on my luck hero character, like Mark Wahlberg or Matthew McConoughey.

An XC60 might be more competent off-road than you anticipate Dis.

Spotted a new big pick up from Fiat a couple of days ago, didn’t look too shabby.

The FIAT Fullback pick-up is a Mitsubishi L200 really. If you can get it cheaper as a FIAT then you might as well I suppose.

Yeah, mine's lifted to get bigger tyres on but also more articulation. This is my mates on a flex ramp.

Haha, it's at his granddad's farm. They've got loads of stables and horses and everything to add to the pikeyness.

If anyone was ever tempted by my adventures here to buy themselves a bargain Shogun, this one looks in excellent shape for the money:

I cant really agree with this.
I think Volvo continue to make consistently the blandest interiors on the market.
Spending time driving a new XC90 convinced me not to buy one. The quality is superb but it has tipped over from minimalist into just plain shit. Literally the only thing inside one is that new tablet interface with huge vents bordering it like some kind of clowns ears. Beyond that there is nothing.
