So, as a few mates have a variety of Land Rovers and I really enjoyed 'Green Laning' I decided to get one. It's actually not officially a Defender, it's a Land Rover 90, which is the one just before the Defender name was introduced.

It started life in the MOD and our very own Tokes got the information of its extensive military career. It was acquired in 1986 by the MOD, where it underwent a series of modifications. Supplied in Nato Green 14 months later the soft top 90 entered active service, at Northumbrian University. Where we can only assume it was tasked with such missions as looking pretty to attract freshers and then ferrying student officers around. In 2001 it was retired from active duty and in 2002 it was released into the wild world of the civvy. Shit story but it had an easy life.

Anyway, when I got it it had been extensively modified to be used off road, lifted, bigger wheels and has a hard top etc. The seating position for me at 6'2 is very upright, stretching out my legs is impossible, yet it is quite comfortable considering how cramped it is. It's noisy, it's slow, and it's fcuking ace! Now grey and with hard top and roof rack it is used for green lanes and overlanding treks camping on the side of mountains. I shall now add some pics and a couple of videos, if anything else interesting turns up I will add them.

Going up a mountain.

'Half a tin of beans' up a massive step and cocking a wheel.

I hate it, I call it the 'Beacon of Shame'. I want to take it off but then I would have 6 holes to fill. I was well aware it would be one of the only things people on here noticed. Basically it was on there when I got it and is on my list of 'jobs' to do. Though it was useful a couple of times when towing a big trailer and then a moron. One of my mates wants it and I said he's welcome to it if he tidies the truck up after taking it off. It spoils the whole look of it.

I don't understand why it's situated where it is. And so low down. It looks about as useful as an anniversary card to my neighbour.

I don't either, if the fcuker wasn't on with 4 massive bolts and with a hole through the top of my rear quarter it would be off by now. Seriously I hate it, I hate it more than you ID.

Let's move on now before I start deleting people and dent my truck angrily ripping the cnut off. First on the delete list - moogs.

I heart that moles. I REALLY want one and wonder if I can make a case for one now we're moving to a more rural location.

Go for it Dis, they are great fun and without a Shame Beacon they are cool as fcuk. That will be gone off mine by the weekend, this thread has reminded me how much I hate it.

Have you considered just taking the orange light bit off. Then if anyone asks about the stalk you can you whisper mysteriously that its a "special fit" from its MoD days.

The beacon of shame does look like a re-purposed army radio antenna.

Quite possible, it still has the original Nato map light by Hella and the Nato Green can be seen in places. But it's a fcuking orange beacon, it can get tae fcuk, as the Scottish would say.

It also has its MOD light switch with convoy controls etc. Other key modifications I missed off are it would have been an NA diesel originally but mine is a 200TDI with Disco axles and diffs, I also have a huge competition spec 13,000lbs Warn winch.

It does look le tits Moley. Just try not to rip the exhaust off, I seem to recall to put a Disco lump in needs a custom made downpipe...

ETA, Disco or 90 transfer box? I assume the latter on that size tyre. Is it tweaked yet? I still know how to turn the power up on those if you're interested.

I think it's a Disco transfer box. So I'm very interested in the power increase, tell me stuff. The exhaust at the 'out' end is being cut off, it pisses me off almost as much as shame beacon.

Right then....

There are three settings on the fuel pump you can tweak as well as the wastegate.

Most people up them to about 15psi (standard is 12psi) boost, which is the same as 300Tdis run. I got mine up to 18 but by that point the wastegate cant cope & floored at high revs was hitting nearer 21psi. IIRC you lengthen the rod from the wastegate to up the boost.

On the fuel pump there is a squareish 'ufo' type thing on the top of it. In the centre of that is an allen bolt which will have a cover over it (if it's never been tweaked). Winding that in increases the base fuelling. It's worth turning this in a bit as it makes it pick up a lot better off boost, so easier to crawl over rocks etc.

When you remove the cover from that 'ufo' there is a diaphragm. Mark it's position before you fiddle. Turning it clockwise means the fuelling increases faster as the boost increases. I found about 45degrees was enough, anymore just created excess smoke.

Finally & probably most importantly. On the back of the pump is a long bolt with a screw slot head. If untampered it'll have a collar clamped around it so it can't be screwed in further & a lockwire to it. Wind this in to increase the maximum fuel flow. I just kept turning this up till it smoked too much at full throttle then backed it off to reduce smoke.

There are bound to be better guides on the net as it has been about 12-14years since I did mine. I had 33s on my Disco so I can imagine how sluggish it is until 1,500rpm or so when the boost comes in.

Cheers Hools, I was talking to a mate about it and we're going to have a go some time this week. It doesn't need more power for the hills, it's the getting there that's a bit shit. I'll update this thread with anything of interest.

I fitted a massive intercooler too & once boosted ti fook it was slightly quicker than a standard V8 off the lights.

ETA. I'd tweak one thing at a time & try it, then you know what made it better/worse & can adjust it to suit yourself.

Some people like the diaphragm turned further to get more power early in the pedal movement, I preferred it with a gradual increase & more power when booted as it gave greater control.

Was a 'Boost Ring' about when you were messing with yours? I know it sounds like something Rod would take an interest in but Google it, they get good reviews.

Ha! Just spent an afternoon dicking about with the fuel pump and boost and stuff. A 31 year old Defender should not be that fast.
