ID''s £15k car challenge

General car gossip.

ID''s £15k car challenge

Post by Il Duce @ Wed Sep 12, 2018 11:31 am

As stated in another thread there are no good lease deals about so I'm looking at buying an Abarth 595 Turismo.

Image

You have about £15k to spend on an alternative.

Rules:
It must not be a fvckingaudi or a shittyCayman
It has to get me to work and back on mixed roads (40 miles roundtrip) and not break down.
I MAY have to drive it to Italy in the summer.
Nothing JLR because Cardiff JLR are hopeless.

Off you go!!

How about an Allegro formerly owned by Leslie Crowther?

Or this -

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde

2015, 240bhp, 16,500 miles

I've never liked the Alfa.

The Subaru would be on the short list if it wasn't for that bloody stupid bonnet scoop.

Good effort though!

At your age you should have some dignity ID, not driving around in some bubble car only suitable for attractive young girls and hipster cnuts

How about a Jag XF - plenty at that price.
personally I've gone off them but they would seem to suit what you want

Nothing from LR either. My balls are more use than the Cardiff dealership.

All right. So not Audi, Jag, Porsche, TVR, LR or anything that you will break as soon as you sit in them like Alfa's or Maseratis

You want prestige, affordability
newish, low mileage
Petrol and manual would be more fun and better economy short of hybrid

got it

p.s. do look at the "comes with" list

I would go with a Nissan 350Z or 370Z.

One of those.

An M3, you probably need winter tyres for your commute, but maybe not

I've got a 595 but it's the Competizione.

If you are going to do it, do it properly.

Highly recommended but buy one a year old or something as the second hand market as a seller is tough.Mine is about 6 years old, bought in April and love it.

Concur on buying used.
As for the Competizione...I bet you're under 30. I'm over 50.
I tried one but found the suspension really hard. I think the difference between the two are the seats and the Comp has sports shocks all round whereas the Turismo has only uprated rear. Is this right? Are there any other differences?

Nissan: It's a possible.
Bentley: I'm not Dirk
Merc: I'm not a woman.

M3: Ooh that was tempting but I have a fear of Cayman bills. Oh and those seats.

Good efforts though. Thanks. More please!

Golf R32?

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds ... dr/5140138

Think I'd be tempted by the 370Z, unless they are plastic emporiums inside.

Out petrol, manual, 11-15k, 50k miles and 6 cylinder engines into pistonheads and there's a deluge of Porsche and BMWs to choose from. Not what you want.

Up it to include 8 cylinders and as long as you don't mind standing at the roadside a bit a 4.0 Chimaera hoves into view:

R32: food for thought
Chimera: Been there done that. AND it didn't ever break down.

Fiat 124. Assuming the Italians do nothing more than nail a badge to it, you're getting a nice reliable MX5 that they'll love you for when you go home.

I hired one last year. It was too harsh on the motorway and too wobbly on the twisties when you pushed on. Horrible thing apart from they made the engine sound exactly like the old 124.

My brother said to buy the Abarth version. It's an option.

On the short list. But which one?

I've researched and it's the Subaru for me.

I have no idea of the differences. Without knowing anything, I would lean Toyota as they have more of a history with two seaters than Subaru (in my mind at least).

What was your reasoning out of interest?

I thought the interior would be better. I just checked and they're both terrible.

Just back from Italy. Had a 595 Turismo from Hertz and I wanted to give it back after 1 hour on the motorway. The tyre roar was unbearable. It was also as bouncy as fvck on the mountain roads. And the turbo lag could have been timed with a calendar.

That said it was perfect to nip up the road (1.5km) and park outside the bar every morning. Just that though.

So I have decided against it and I'm going back down the lease route. My accountant concurs.

Shortlist:
Golf R- although no stock available at the moment so no price available
Mini JCW
Volvo XC60 T5- purely because it's only £275 a month.

Fancied a Megane RS but they want and incredible £400+ per month. For a £28k car. Ha!

Have you actually had a look at the Volvo? I borrowed a V60 from work the other day and the inside is actually a very nice place to be.

S3 is a bit quieter, doesn't handle as well, and the dealers are bastards.
