What was the last film you watched?

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

Hm. Sounds "life affirming". I'd be pretty insulted if I were you ID. It's like if mr span wanted to show me a film about how it's never too late in life to start shaving your legs every day and do some sit ups.

That was my first thought when she suggested the film.
Now that it's practically confirmed I shall deny her the film and a good bumming.
That'll teach her.

Pigeon or Moles can edit it out once they see it. I could get rid of it too, but I'd have to ban you and delete all your posts to do it!

Sorry about that. You must have mentioned kitchens or watches or handbags just a bit too early. Now deleted, and you're beyond the limit now so it won't happen again.

Anyway, Annihilation (2nd attempt)

Loved it. A high concept Sci fi that makes demands upon the viewer, if you abrogate that, it's a 4, 5/10. If you take it on though, it's easily an instant classic. What is it telling you? Is the ever growing shimmer & what's going on inside it a metaphor for cancer? A reflection of the human condition? A mirror held up to our fallibilities? Am I talking a pile of flowering bollocks? Possibly all of those.

What stands it up for me is the idea that the answers are for you to work out. It walks a tightrope of ambiguity between pretentious honkery & mind expanding themes & if you watch it twice, it becomes clear Alex Garland places all kinds of indicators in the film to guide you. 9/10 for Eddie Norman.

Atonement, Lady Chatterley's daughter has an affair with groundskeeper willy's son, and things go all wrong from there. Really good to look at with carefully constructed sets but the story line is absolute bollocks, by the time there is a massive record scratch at the end and the narrator (now an old woman) talks about her vascular dementia, I thought it had turned into a parody/farce, but no it seems it's a tragic love story and on IMDB it scores an improbable 7.8/10, I'd give it 2, and I only award those points because it's good to look at.

The Villainess.

Long, violent, and pretty bloody good. With the emphasis on "bloody".

I can't comment on the book since I haven't read it, and can imagine there is a lot more dialogue and inner thoughts passages, but stand by my verdict that the film is an unintentional comedy, frample I thought the letter he sent just said cnut on it, until I read a review which explains it is a bawdy erotic letter.

Silly die-hard-esque comedy action nonsense.

Isle of Dogs

I like Wes Anderson but this didn’t work for me. Imagine Fantastic Mr Fox without the charm or humour. Which makes It sound grim and bleak, which it isn’t at all. It just doesn’t engage.

Justice League

Ultimately rubbish. It’s like they got a team of Channel 5 viewers to watch all the Marvel films and said “That, but Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman”. Unoriginal in every way.

Technically all of the elements are there to make an ace blockbuster but only in the same way a Porsche and a Vauxhall are both technically cars. Aquaman was OK and WW fit but I wanted everyone else to die.

Dire.

Laugh. I have JL on a disc waiting to be watched on a dull afternoon. At the moment my afternoons are spent changing light fittings, so it may take some time to get to it, and reviews like that are not going to help it press its claim to my time.

I noticed the disc cover has a bit of a spoiler in that dead Supermsn looks less dead than he was. Nicely done, DC.

The Hitmans Bodyguard.

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson. Reynolds is a body guard having to escort Samuel L Jackson, who is an international assassin, to the Hague to testify for some guys warcrimes while a bunch of people try to kill them.

Really good, Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson are great together. Decent action and quite funny in places.

Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Superb. Just watch it. Clearly Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell are brilliant but it also cemented Woody Harrelson as one of my favorite actors.

Blockers.

A rare foray into the cinema as inlaws looked after kids, I wanted to see Ready Player One (book was brilliant) but wife vetoed that so we compromised on Blockers. Teen/parent comedy about 3 girls on their prom night intent on losing their virginity and their parents discovering their plan and intent on blocking them. Sounds terrible but some laugh out loud moments and a bit of a throwback to various 80s teen comedies. Enjoyable and silly. 6.5

Lol, to be honest, with kids and the 6 monthly visits to the cinema, even seeing a shit film is better than nothing.

I loved it, it was right up my straße. And I watched it in the morning because I usually watch a film while I'm at gymnastics with my daughter so I don't have to talk to the other mums. I had lots to say about The Villainess, but I cba now, except to claim that the first eight minutes of the film are categorically the most unexpectedly exciting eight minutes of film I've seen in flippin' ages!

Oh look, here it is -

Original video page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp6Qrj2ljv8

Mazing! 7.7

I also watched the Guy Ritchie effort at The Man From U.N.C.L.E, which was sadly nothing like as fun and arch as I wanted it to be, even though I think the film thought it was. Henry Cavill was terrific though but Alicia Vikander was wasted. The surprising highlight was the music, which was superbly evocative of period (sixties) and place and made me want to buy a soundtrack album for the first time since John Carpenter's Prince Of Darkness (wow, 1987).

And then suddenly the final twenty minutes or so went bananas and had ludicrous off road car chase action which seemed to be an aerial assault on the film from somewhere around 2009. Bonkers. 5.9

Had three whole days off in a row this week, so made the most of day three by wasting it watching films.

Finally got around to The Deer Hunter - and found it very different to what I expected, and brilliant.

Then went straight into Once Upon A Time In America (watch one De Niro film and Amazon tells you you need to watch all of them) and was surprised I may even prefer it to The Godfather Pt. 2 as crime epics go.

Most recent cinema outing was Darkest Hour, which turned out to be quite a bit more boring than I thought it might, I mainly enjoyed the interactions between Churchill and George VI and how stunning Kristin Scott-Thomas looks even made up to be an old woman.

Next up will be Peter Rabbit...
