What have you watched on telly?

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

Yup, superb TV. Makes me want to start over from S1.

The boy is still a dreadful actor though.

I heard an interview with him and the female officer the other day and he’s Scottish. He’s obviously concentrating hard on putting on an English accent and forgets to act.

Yes agreed, he's the weakling of the show. 5 series in and you have no idea of his character at all; it hit home last night when the girl in his car invited him up and there was absolutely zero chemistry or anything coming off him. Wanker.

Caught up on Sunday's episode (3rd?) and honestly I'm beginning to dislike it.

Other than the bad acting my main complaint is the number of times they say "bent copper". I stopped counting at ten last night. The Scouser must have said it a dozen times alone. It's so distracting and unrealistic.

Just watched the entire series and it's much better than it has been for years, far less scripted and much more spontaneity. (Most importantly, Hammond hardly does his awful mawkish look to camera)

  • SPOILER: Mouse over to reveal

I had a free month of Prime and so downloaded the whole of S3. I've now cancelled the Prime. FY Amazon!

Turned on my tablet, still in flight mode, ready to watch the remaining 9 episodes I'd downloaded only to be told that my Prime subscription had expired and I can't. WTF?

Bosch season 4 on Prime - gonna start with it tonight.

Just re-watched S3 over the weekend to get back into it.

Love the vibe and actors in this.

Annoyingly I was going to catch up tonight but will have your critical words in my head now and will not be able to ignore what you’ve said. You’ve probably killed one of my favourite shows, possibly justifiably.

Im the same Teeks.
On one hand I still love it and find it the most compulsive viewing of almost any tv programme.
On the other hand it is riddled with some really cringeworthy touches.
In addition to what you said, the camera work is embarrassing. It is like they have given the job of filming to an enthusiastic, yet D grade, A-level filming student.
So so very many 'arty' shots of the camera peeking at a conversation through a slit in the blinds, or the crack in a door, that just look stupid and don't work at all.
Oh, and the dialogue. The dialogue. It has gone to shit. Again, it has moments of gcse drama student improv.
I still love it though. I just wish it was better.

It made it quite comical, especially as he was really emphasizing it as, in my mind, you'd told him too.

Whoever said After Life was good - well played.

I could so easily be that character if I ever were to let my Vulcan-like psychological self control slip. Even though I’m not a widower (fingers crossed).

I have watched loads of telly which I ought to tell you about, but for now I watched an extraordinary programme last night that I've never seen, or even heard of before:

Celebrity Eating With My Ex.

Presumably some junior exec who'd sold his soul to Rupert Murdoch thought that the only way to improve on a romantic gently life affirming show like First Dates would be to create its spiteful infernal twin; Last Dates, if you will.

Split up couples have a meal together, and interrogate each other on their behaviour when they were dating. There were two celebrity couples on the programme, a pair of extravagant drag queens - who I presume are celebrities in different circles than I'm aware of - and also a youngish couple. The hapless bloke looked like they'd found him in a Yates's, and the girl I genuinely assumed was a Babestation-esque second-tier porner, riddled with tattoos, including on her face, and wearing an outfit where the top seemed to have already suffered crushing defeat in early skirmishes against her Cyberdyne battletits.

My skybox info-ed me up and told me she was Jemma Lucy. You won't have heard of her either ofc, so here's a picture :

Image

Google reveals she is not in fact a sex worker, but is a "reality television performer", known* for Ex On The Beach and Celebrity Big Brother. Further proof of the Circle Of Life cannibalism of the definition of celebrity in the 21st century.

More than anything, the programme made me feel old. Not shocked and despondent like Just Tattoo Of Us did, nor despondent and weirdly amused like Naked Attraction does, just old. It wasn't funny or lurid or car-crash-can't-look-away ghastly or even interesting.

I was just too tired to find the remote control, and now I've seen it.

Have I missed discussion of Game of Thrones here or has nobody discussed it because it's stating the obvious.

Anyway, the other night's episode 3 I believe is the single best 90 minutes of television I have ever seen. It was mind-blowingly clever in places (like the Dothraki charging off into the distance with their fire spears) and the way they controlled tension etc was brilliant.
Marred slightly by a few moments that didn't make much sense unless you were a GOT geek but nevertheless amazing.

Given that this episode was only 3 of 6, I cant imagine how it is going to end on anything other than an anti-climax but it continues to surprise me.

I know everyone watches it and it’s supposed to be really good and it’s not about dragons etc but

I've watched GOT from the very beginning, and found this week's colossal battle episode thoroughly whelming. It wasn't boring or crap, but it felt thin - nothing seemed to have any real heft or impact.

A bit of an anticlimax after seven serieses.

Also same. It certainly lacked the claustrophobic blood and mud feel of the Battle of the Bastards and some of it just felt ridiculous, the dragons particularly. The ending stank of Deus Ex Machina too.

I think that Game Of Thrones would probably be better without 90% of the CGI, so they would just have to write better scripts.

I watched this last night and was underwhelmed too.

Quibbles:

- the cinematography made it fcuking difficult to see what was going on, which is kind of the point of visual media. We had bugger all idea of how ineffective the Dothraki really were, or how effective the wights were when charging.

- too many overt plot devices.
  • SPOILER: Mouse over to reveal
    • Eliminate the Dothraki early to save CGI'ig the horses. Give the NK power over the weather to eliminate the effectiveness of the dragons.

- bizarre battlefield tactics. Not using your aerial bombardment weapons, and placing your infantry in front of your (single) fire trench are bad ideas.

- an insufficient number of major character deaths. This is the big one for me because it devalued the entire ep. I like all the major characters, but despite that I feel that some of them should have been culled to give greater meaning to this battle.

-
  • SPOILER: Mouse over to reveal
    • Arya's set piece was well-signposted; the only surprise really was the reprise of her "trick".

I think the problem with deaths wasn't that there weren't enough, but that the characters who died were ones the story had finished with. The really momentous GOT character deaths are the ones where the character is still in the middle of their storyline. I'll never forget the Red Viper's duel, forex.

I also watched the GOT Big Battle ep last night. It was entertaining, but really hard to see what was going on, and the tactics were awful - but I guess they made for better TV than a 'break yourselves on our walls' siege would have.

  • SPOILER: Mouse over to reveal
    • What I'm confused about is that I'm sure Arya gave her dagger to Sansa early in the episode but she had it for the big finish...

Nah, that was just an ordinary dragon glass dagger.

I didn't love the episode, too dark, lots of samey long scenes, but there were some notable highlights.

I watched it after coming back from a stag weekend in Cardiff so it's possible I was just in such a fowl mood that I didn't appreciate it enough.

Going against the grain here a bit, but I liked it a lot. The Dothraki scene was amazing/heartbreaking to watch and I hearted Arya even more by the end.

Here's a pic of the Night King with an umbrella.
