What have you watched on telly?

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

Binged the whole series, loved it, and while his accent was bad, it wasn’t bad enough to set your teeth on edge (like Don Cheadles in Oceans 11 for example).

Amazon has already given the go-ahead to season 2 so maybe they’ll get him a decent voice coach.

I demi-binged The Boys in two fat chunks. I really enjoyed it. Some of the writing was a bit woolly, but on the whole it was clever and great fun.

I thought the cast were great, Karl Urban especially - and I didn't find his wayward Aussie/UK accent jarring. But everyone was good; I spent ages trying to place the actor playing Homelander before surrendering to IMDB and finding it was Banshee's crim-turned-Sherriff Antony Starr. He was great - switching terrifyingly between affable and beaming, and utterly sinister and inhuman.

Even I was initially taken aback by the sheer onslaught on Urban's carpet c-bombing, but after a while it simply becomes another aspect of his character. Literally desensitisation at work.

Anyway, loved it. Really looking forward to the already-shooting second series.

My next thing will be Wu Assassins I think. Another step on the ladder to stardom for Iko Uwais, and apparently even more brilliant than I was hoping it would be. I'll let you know.

Being on the cutting edge of entertainment, I watched episode 1 of Peaky Blinders with Mrs CW the other day. I thought is was good enough to warrant watching further episodes to see if we get into it, Mrs CW didn't.

Is it worthy enough for me to fight this battle, or should I just be magnanimous and let it go?

I dropped it toward the end of the first series. Just didn’t click and seemed unnecessarily dour and bleak without a single redeeming character.

We both loved it.

MrsH didn't seem too taken by fleabag which we gave a go yesterday, so not sure we'll get past the 2nd ep on that.

Fleabag is a series I very much wanted to love, but just didn't. Bailed about ep 4-5.

Series two started last night, I haven't watched it yet but am really excited!

Otherwise, I'm currently enjoying the second series of Mindhunter. The first focused more on the character of Holden, whereas this is more about his partner Tench (yay!) and the academic borefest Lesbian (that's probably not her actual name but instead of an engaging personality they gave her that, and tight pencil skirts. I briefly liked her when she started feeding a cat some tuna (not a euphemism) but that her most compelling storyline just fizzled).

There's a fairly harrowing subplot about Tench's son, and the usual horrible murders and murdering in the background, but it retains its charm and humour and we're equally hooked as we were with the first.

Finished S1 of The Boys last night and I'm thoroughly pissed off that I can't start S2 immediately.

Any fans of the German time travel series Dark on Netflix?

Just finished season 2 and oh my word it’s good - possibly one of the best shows around at the moment, but you really have to concentrate. No exposition, and really just let the story play out - it’s confusing at first but the convoluted plot and twists from the time travel all slowly start to fall into place. Very clever bit of mindfuckery.

Also am ploughing through Too Old To Die Young on Amazon Prime.

Now, this is a series by Nicolas Winding Refn, he of Drive and Valhalla Rising fame. Each episode is about 1.5 hours long, and are all beautifully shot with his signature slow pacing and very limited dialogue. Can’t decide if it’s pretentious arthouse shite or cinematic genius. I’m still enjoying it though - and have been dipping in and out randomly.

It’s set loosely around an LA cop (Miles Teller) who gets involved in the criminal underground and has a sideline as a hitman. He also has a bit of an underage girlfriend which adds to the overall uncomfortable viewing experience of it all. Frankly, it’s just plain weird, but I guess that’s NWR’s style - I like some of his work a lot, but thought Only God Forgives was awful so I’m not a raging fanboy.

If you fancy trying it, I would guess the first 20 minutes would give you the general idea of whether you’d enjoy it or find it atrocious. Would love to hear what anyone else thinks!

I might try that on a taster basis. I am also not a raging fanboy, although did like Only Good Forgives very much (even though it makes no sense!)

Years and Years.

Somehow I missed this when it was first on earlier in the year and just started watching. OMG! It’s brilliant. Funny, but also terrifying. It’s got Russell Tovey and Emma Thompson and you must watch it!

I did the first three (?) episodes and enjoyed them, but then gave up on the rest through massive apathy.

I watched the first two tonight and was all fired up with enthusiasm.

Years and Years was OK. A bit Black Mirror lite. All very believable too given the current climate.

Agree. I thought it was ridiculously twee which seems to be a common issue with everything written by Russel T Davies.

I finished watching Years and Years tonight and I was totally blown away by it. I freely admit that I’m useless at critical watching so YMMV, but I loved it. There were some bits that were heavy handed (gran lecturing on consumism forex) even for me but I really liked how it ended.

Is anyone still watching Handmaid’s Tale? It’s still one of the best things I’ve seen on tv, but I really hope they don’t keep making series until it becomes shit.

In other tv news, Peaky Blinders!

I thought the new Black Mirrors were quite disappointing.

I'm a few episodes into Boys on Amazon, the ireverent take on superheroes. The main Superman equivalent is a brilliant pyscho.

I didn't know what accent the lead guy was meant to have, so that didn't bother me too much.

Excuse me? Yes, you. >waves hand at all of you<

Can someone please explain your abject failure to ensure that Inside No. 9 was brought to my attention at the earliest opportunity?

I am very disappointed. This should have been on my desk on day 1!

This is a no-blame culture, but it is basically your fault, stuart.
