Best ever TV series?

Post by Turntable @ Thu Aug 31, 2017 9:55 am

All this chit chat about GoT makes me conclude that it must be the best thing ever made. It is universally loved and almost no people who watch it think otherwise.
And now that it is finished for the moment, it got me wondering if I have missed any other gems out there, or if anything comes close.
At the time I though Sopranos was on a par with this but I worry whether it is dated now, or if it was just the first of this new type of big budget series that my love for it was exaggerated. I don't know.
Anyway, you say some stuff?

I don't think GoT is *that* great. It's good, but I'll never think about it again once it it's over...

The Wire remains incredible.

Also, nobody else will agree but I find the original Miami Vice to be the near-perfect collision of visual and musical nostalgia for an era I remember as being 'for adults' when I was growing up and can watch it endlessly.

The Shadow Line
Ashes to Ashes
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Big Little Lies

I love GoT but I don't know I'd say it was my favourite ever.

I've started watching that recently, I saw the first couple of seasons when it was originally broadcast but then missed too much to get back into it, now the whole thing is on Netflix.

I watched 1.5 series of this and then just got bored. Quite liked it but it didn't grip me enough to carry on.

The Wire, but only if you have the patience to really really concentrate on it, reading the subtitles when the West Baltimore accent becomes impenetrable.

Alright Perry!

Not very original but Breaking Bad still ranks above everything else I've watched.

Breaking Bad would be hard to top I think. I loved the Sopranos and it's still very watchable. The Bridge stands out for me amongst the various Scandi-drams and I found Line of Duty quite compelling. I also really liked Big Little Lies (sorry).

Things not mentioned above. I gravitate towards crime-y things. I've never seen a single episode of Mad Men or Game of Thrones, forex. Not interested in the former and I'll probably only watch the latter if/when it turns up on Netflix.

House of Cards (both versions)
Dexter
The Killing (both versions)
Red Riding (is this a series? There's three of them. That's a series, right?)
Bosch
Luther
Inspector Morse
Archer

Mrs J adores:

Mad Men
Nashville
Designated Survivor
Mad Men
GLOW

Stuff I was profoundly meh about:

Anything with a superhero in it (Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, etc) - won't be watching Iron Fist.
All of those series that ran out of viewers/money/ideas: The 4400, FlashForward, The Event, The Following, etc.
Stuff that just went really really silly: Fringe, Lie To Me

Wrong tt. This was superb.

I don't think any telly is faultless though, by any means. I loved Dexter, but entire serieses of it were disappointing, and the final one fcuked it all royally. I like GOT, but too much of earlier serieses felt like filler. TWD same. I liked Castle, but it was fluff. Similarly Buffy. I've never watched The Wire though, or The Sopranos, or Breaking Bad - so maybe they're masterpieces.

The Shadow Line was great, but no more than that. Is entirely forgotten it existed until this thread. I'd have to look back at the last few years of the telly thread to see what I've really liked, but the mere fact that I can't remember suggests none of it was all that .

River Monsters with Jeremy Wade!

Like crack : made in the jungle and cut in a British toilet, sold by a hideous man with teeth like headstones in a swamp. Awful to consume, but disgustingly moreish

Below Breaking Bad, I'd put Night Manager and Big Little Lies. I even think of them quite similarly in that each episode was a total pleasure that I didn't want to end, and I could rewatch them.

I thought Black Mirror was very hit and miss (often miss) and it's really more a set of themed standalones rather than a series.

I really liked Battlestar Galactica (the remake) right up until they utterly, utterly fcuked it at the end.

Also the first two or maybe three series of The X-Files.

1. West Wing
2. The Wire

Rest in no particular order:
Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip (annoyingly only 1 series)
Luther
Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul
Lost
The Bridge (Scandi version)
Fargo
I'm Alan Partridge
Buffy (allow it)
Sopranos
Cracker
Twin Peaks

I have watched The Wire twice all the way through and I'm currently on my 3rd viewing of West Wing. I don't think I'd watch any of the others again. Maybe Luther.

It's a huge time investment but there is a weekly podcast accompanying the series. Every week two guys (one of them an actor from WW) sit down for an hour to talk about a particular episode (in order, obv). They get on the actors, writers or experts on the show's subject (e.g. economics or w'ev). Some fascinating insights.

The show is still absolutely brilliantly written and acted and it's still relevant today. Perhaps more relevant today than ever and you cringe watching Bartlet handling situations and thinking about how Trump would screw it up.

Couldnt hook into The Wire despite picking at a couple of episodes. But I know there is something there.
Can anyone describe what in particular drew them in?
