Best ever TV series?

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

In the 3 series I watched I would say that nothing drew me in. I kept making myself persevere because everyone else in the world loved it so much but it didn't hook me in any way whatsoever.
The characters and dialogue are all very good, but they are also all quite bland and I just couldn't bring myself to care about the fate of anyone in it hence found myself just watching as an indifferent observer.

It's like a documentary somehow. That is part of it's appeal I think.

Vikings. Luther. Man in the High Castle. 12 Monkeys has its moments. The Icelandic murder thing. No that one, not the other one. Fortitude. Rome. The tudors.

Hmm. Tricky.

The Wire - watched it once. Enjoyed it a lot. But I have little inclination to watch it a second time. There was at least one season that dragged quite badly (one about schools, or school districts maybe? Can't recall now).

The West Wing - preferred this and have watched it twice all the way through. Excellent writing with only a few "soft" episodes. But I wonder whether if I were to go back to it now it would seem to be a bit "of its time" - an idealised notion of what American Government ought to be made wistful by current events.

BSG - excellent; have watched this through three times. But again, many of the themes (eg theological war, suicide bombers, were more striking set against then-current events). Also there's at least half a season that drags.

BTVS - highly enjoyable. First couple of seasons move slowly through the gears. But once up and running it is excellent. The original "story arc" TV series. Apparently still revered in the industry for that.

Frasier - timeless. Brilliantly written, perfectly drawn characters, excellent comic timing all round.

Star Trek TOS - gets an honourable mention. Waned in the third series, and Shatner's "acting" is, well, poor. But idealistic, intellectual, ground breaking, very little reliance on battles and explosions, and the good episodes still stand up 50 years later.

GoT - probably the one I have been most entertained by, and which has been the most consistent. But that is due to the quality of the story telling in the books, and once you read them and realise how much is left out of the narrative to fit each series into ten episodes it it hard not to think that it could have been even better.

The Killing (Scandi) - loved this. Totally engrossing across all three seasons.

Line of Duty - recently re-watched S1-4, and I'd say this takes the title it by a short nose. It benefits from shorter seasons that the other series. The tension and intrigue are absolutely first class, and the story arc continues (and is yet to be resolved) over the four seasons.

@KM: the Icelandic thing is Trapped.

now, how long before this thread descends into "TV series you have seen (not necessarily all of)".

I think the Wire is very good but bleak, I couldn't watch it again once I'd seen how it played out.

Hang on - you do realise that these so-called "serieses" are just made up, right?

The answer is none of this lot.

There is only one TV series worth watching - a very excellent and now quite old TV series.

And only the first series too.

See if you can guess - it was mostly set in Dusseldorf.

As said I'm rewatching it now and WW really isn't dated. Other than the clothes, the use of pagers and phrases like "the story will break on the internet in the morning" it still feels relevant.

I only watched the US version of The Killing but thought it was superb. Very noir. Might try the Scandinavia version.

He is shit. But I liked the way the production team seemed to take the piss by dressing him up like a schoolboy in the first series to emphasise how tiny and wee he is.

In no particular order...things i've really enjoyed, too many differing things to actually rank them I think, like preferring a beer on a hot sunny day to a nice red wine in the winter.

* 24 (tell me you didn't hear those beeps and not watch another episode even though it was past your bedtime)

* Breaking Bad

* Walking Dead

* Badlands (me only, wife didn't entertain it a bit)

* Big Bang Theory

* GoT (although i'm only on S4)

* The Wire

* Dexter

* Orphan Black (really like thism and watching at the moment, on S2 - wife and I both like it)

* Fawlty Towers

* Prison Break (only first, maybe second series though)

* Battlestar Galactica (new version)

* Designated Survivor

* Orange is the new black (something we're ticking over watching, easy to pick up and carry on with)

* Daredevil/JJ/Luke Cage (not Iron First! pap)

* Stranger Things

* Homeland

* True Detective

* Sons of Anarchy

* Band of Brothers

* The 100

* Vikings

* Only Fools & Horses

* A-Team

* Baywatch

Those last ones were childhood stuff, along with perhaps Red Dwarf?

I hadn't thought to include comedies, but I would have thought a sitcom could be a series, no?

Actually, it's going back a bit now, but The Vice was excellent. Predated the Wire and Luther et al, but the same mix of corrupt / not corrupt messy policeyness, just set in Laaaarndon.

Ken Stott and Marc Warren were both exceptionally good in it.

I've never seen the Vice but did see a few episodes of Hill street blues, which was one of the first tv shows to have a film budget spend per episode, it still seems to be critically acclaimed.

I really liked OZ 'back in the day' and it effectively made HBO what it is. I re-watched it recently and it seemed very dated and very much like a stage play (which it sort of is).

Well, arguably Parks & Rec that I posted is as much sitcom as series, but it has a very definite story arc or arcs across each season, and further across seasons. I'd argue that with the exception of Niles trying to nail Daphne over the course of 7 seasons or so, the above sitcoms don't really have a story arc.

Obviously I've just decided a story arc is what defines a series for the purposes of this thread, because RULES!!! and BUZZKILL!!!

Good shout. I used to love that.

What was that Neil Pearson one? Between the LInes was it? Can't remember much about it now other than I really enjoyed it.

Also Utopia was excellent.

Bojack Horseman - watch it if you haven't, it's excellent (takes 3 or 4 episodes to get into though)
