Supposedly good actors but not, IYO.

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

I’d quite enjoy beating Steve Carell to death using Rob Schneider as a club.

Loads of funny actors there,

Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Chris Rock , Will Ferrell, Chevy Chase, Richard Pryor, Mel Brooks, Danny Devito, Gene Wilder, Buster Keaton, Leslie Nielson. Some of the others aren't bad either.

Dr Wolff wrote:As a genre, I hate anyone who purports to be an "American comedy actor". I googled it and got the following list;

There is an exception on there, John Belushi, but that is it. I don't get them, they aren't funny and anything that involves unlikely virgins meeting the in-laws and being inappropriate has me heading for the hills.

Hope the link works - looks wrong when pasted in to this post

Agree completely. My wife loves all those types of films and I hate them.
Conversely I quite like really good films and she hates them.
I regularly question our marriage.

I missed the slagging off of Brad Pitt in this thread and its made me all hot under the collar.
I think Brad Pitt is one of the best and most versatile actors alive and any attempt to call him ordinary makes me feel sick inside.
The following films he was phenomenal and plays completely different characters:

Babel
Assasination of Jesse James
Seven
Killing them Softly (hated the film but he was superb)
Snatch
Meet Joe Black

Even in the films where he is just being Brad Pitt he is excellent.

Motion to dismiss him denied.

That’s a ridiculously under rated film.

To argue against Dibs's and agree with TT I thought Steve Carell and Brad Pitt were both good in "The Big Short".

I will concede a little on Steve Martin and Bill Murray. Chris Rock? How is being shouty and offensive funny or good acting?

Agree. One of my favourite films ever. Every single scene in that is exquisite.

Ok not Chris Rock, he doesn't annoy me though. You don't mention the others though
Eddie Murphy is really funny in trading places frample, Will Ferrell is good in anchorman, Chevy Chase in good in three amigos, Richard Pryor is often cited by comedians as the greatest standup of all time, Mel Brooks is a better writer/director than actor but still decent in blazing saddles, Danny Devito is really funny in 'It's always sunny in Philadelphia' and Twins etc. Gene Wider - blazing saddles, the young Frankenstein, the producers etc. Leslie Nielsen - Airplane, naked gun, he was a decent serious actor as well.

I'll let you have Leslie Nielson, Strawms. I've got an idea - we either need this as a poll or some clever Pigeon or such like to turn it into a pictogram

or I could continue to post and each time i get another accepted to the good list till I have whittled down your original list to a small handful. I agree with your more general point that a lot of American 'comedies' are not funny at all, well I assume this because I rarely watch them.
