Supposedly good actors but not, IYO.

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

I heard a story about Hathaway from a journalist who met her just before interviewing her and shook hands with her. Hathaway immediately turned to her assistant and asked for antibacterial wipes.

Rude.

All I'll admit about Roberts is that some of the roles she's had have dated.

Vivian in Pretty Woman was actually pretty annoying and it's ridiculous that I should have WANTED to be a prostitute before I even understood what one was, thanks to that film.

Also, Notting Hill - she is such a spoiled brat in that film. But then Richard Curtis films (which I still do love) do have some awful stereotypes, and terribly written women.

She was ever so good in August: Osage County though! As was Meryl, obviously. And I do think she has / had a very attractive way about her, and an Audrey Hepburn-type smile.

Well I dont mind Julia Roberts. She is gawky but attractive and weirdly charismatic.

But nevermind all that. Heres a question I remember I used to ponder:

Is an actor good if he/she only really plays up to their own character?
Al Pacino, De Niro, Morgan Freeman. They do a good job in their roles, undoubtedly, but achieve it by varying around their same basic persona.
Al- Wise guy with a sense of menace
Bob- more tacit version of the same
Morgo- righteous and wizened.

Does an actor not need to be able to competely transform himself to be worthy of being called good? Or is that some other quality (versatility maybe?)

An actor can be a good character actor, like Harry D Stanton, or a good versatile actor, as long as they recognise their own strengths, frample Sean Connery did a terrible Irish accent early in his career and never tried to do a foreign accent again, even playing a Russian submarine captain in his own voice. Pacino has range beyond paying a hoodlum; scent of a woman, dog day afternoon, merchant of Venice etc.

Imagine a little school in Cornwall. A rotund kindly teacher asks the tiny class what they want to be when they grow up. A PROZZIE! yells proto-span, proudly doing a twirl and doing a sassy walk around the crafts box.

For people of a certain generation Pretty Woman would probably rank as a top-5 romantic film and yet the premise is so so wrong.

It's like the Twilight films. Horrifying relationship model - two controlling, jealous and possessive men battle for possession of a mixed-up teenager. Just so wrong on every level, yet all the girls want to be Bella.

Sorry.

There are films she's in I like (Ocean's 11) but I think that's in spite of her being in it, not because she's in it. I also liked The Pelican Brief.

I'd have thought it'd be the other person who needed the antibacterial wipes. Surely she's a bit smelly by now?

Poor Julia Roberts, I hope she never joins up here

Sandra Bollox, useless and annoying. Nic Cage is a pet hate, Hanks would like to think he's brilliant but is crap.
Julia Roberts smile is like that woman on the electrocution machine in some Eddie Murphy movie, Idris Elba I agree with, so far up his own arse he should be four feet three.
Depp....FFS, give up already will you.
Quite a few of my cars go out to movies and as a result I get a bit of insider knowledge on some actors.....for instance....Glen Close, besides being as pretty as a newt is by all accounts a super cool person to film with, hangs out eating sandwiches with the lads, speaks normally with no airs or graces. Same as Ed Sheeran....took all the guys out to the local pub and got pissed apparently. Natalie Portman is a bit of a tw@t.

Mostly agree, but one of my favourite films is The Weatherman. But Nic Cage was very Nic Cage'ish in that role, but it suited the role.

Never mind that Clown, as a woman do you think Julia Roberts is an attractive woman?

Same question to you Spanners.

This is important.

Erm... Yes I do. I've always liked her smile.

Uggh! That's literally her worst part!

I thought we had a connection Clown, but now I see you're just like Moley.

Wild at Heart and Raising Arizona were pretty good, the latter especially because of him. Otherwise (take note Ivanka if you're reading), I agree.

I like Erin B and will usually watch it again if it's on. A large part of that is down to Albert Finney, but JR does it no harm at all.
