Ghostwatch!! (1992)

Post by span @ Fri Oct 20, 2017 9:23 am

Did anyone see this at the time? A BBC hoax "reality" programme that went out live on Halloween and descended into terror as everyone was getting got by actual ghosts. I was 11 and so just the age to be totally terrified and believe every moment of it.

Here's an interesting article on the programme and the fallout. Being reminded of some of the details, it not only brings back a touch of trauma but also makes me realise quite how daring it was at the time.

At the end of Ghostwatch, technology fails as presenters realise they have unwittingly invoked a kind of “national seance”. Parkinson is left muttering to himself in the dark. Then the credits, and silence.

Fcukin' Parkinson!!!! of COURSE we were terrified!! I didn't find out it wasn't real until someone told me in DT* on MONDAY!!!

*Design Tech, not Deets or Damo

I'm guessing that Dis, Clown, Moley and Deev are most likely to remember this because I think they're closest to my age, where you might have watched it on your own but also believed it.

OMG, I remember that! It was terrifying even though rationally I knew it was bullshit.

Fascinating article, cheers span!

Good, well done.

That Ghostwatch sounds ace. I don't remember it as I would have been 18 when it aired and probably drinking beer.
Wish I had seen it.

I watched it and remember the massive terrified fuss it caused. I was 22 so remember snidely condemning all the people who thought it was real for not bothering to read in the Radio Times that it was a drama.

What an arse.

I remember it happening but at sixteen I was a bit too old to be believing in ghosts.

I remember the outrage afterwards, and people saying they should have made it more obvious it was a hoax

Inspired by this thread I have just bought the DVD of Ghostwatch (and Stone Tape as a double disc offer). Oddly, I seem to remember watching this live but it would coincide with my last year at Dartmouth. I suppose I could have been home for the weekend though.

Did someone show you a picture of my hands? They've aged prematurely. But if you look at my eyes they still sparkle and you get a glimpse of the girl I once was!

I've started noticing that the back of my hands aren't as youthful as they once were. Does such a thing as a handlift exist?

I haven't seen your hands. I was just going on how much of a responsible adult you seem to be - all grown-up and considerate and shit.

ETA: and then it turns out that you're practically a foetus!

I remember the big fuss surrounding it, and I know I watched it, but for the life of me can’t remember anything about the program itself! Spooky!!

Nope, don't remember that at all. I do remember that Channel 4 thing where they told a bunch of idiots they were actually in space on a shuttle and they believed they were, Despite being in a portacabin in Sheffield or something.
