Kevin Costner

Some things cultured but mostly films and telly stuff.

Kevin Costner

Post by Greg66 @ Thu Jun 21, 2018 11:41 am

I came across this the other day: https://abcnews.go.com/theview/video/ke ... t-56006639

"I'm not recognising America right now" is skilfully powerful line. Anyway, made me think about Costner. There was a time in the 90s when you couldn't move for Costner films. Some were genuinely good - forex I made the girls watch Dances with Wolves against their wishes and they loved it. Tin Cup is one of my favourite sports films of all times, as is Field of Dreams. Some, less so (Waterworld; Robin Hood is too hokey for me). I guess he hit market saturation and (mixing metaphors) having flown so very close to the sun plummeted to the ground hard.

But he actually seems like a pretty decent guy, with some genuine charm. And he can act - one of the best moments in the otherwise dire Man of Steel is the scene in the barn culminating in "You are my son".

Anyway. Costner. Overrated hate figure or good guy?

You forgot one of his biggest stinkers, The Postman

Image

Sort of a weak Mad Max derivative where a postal delivery man grows a moustache and tries to save the girl.

I've seen bits of a few of his films. The fact that I've never bought and/or kept one of his films says it all.

I don't hate him.
I hate Owen Wilson though.
So much so, that I have to change channels when the cnut talks about sofas.

It's slightly corny but I still love A Perfect World. Bull Durham, No Way Out, JFK, Untouchables all still very watchable.

I like him.

I went to see Dances With Wolves in the cinema with my parents even though I was only fourteen and it was a fifteen. Waterworld was not a great film, being as charitable as possible.

The "films about sport" genre seems to have died a death.

No way!

He is Hollywood's answer to Chas & Dave, who became a little too known for their songs about sport.

I think most of his energies these days go into running his membership only warehouse household goods retail empire.

I suspect I'm not alone in being unable to forgive him for Waterworld. The fact I've never watched The Postman, but hate him for making that too says it all really. If it wasn't for Alan Rickman, his Robin Hood wouldn't have been much cop either.

He’s a bit of an arse in real life apparently - he caused a real stink over Dennis Pennis.

Anyway, I like him on screen - just watched him in Ep 1 of a new series he stars in called Yellowstone - he owns a massive ranch in Montana and is fighting to save it etc. Good role for him.

I enjoyed it to some extent, I suspect for at least partially the same reason that it was nice to see some sailing boats in a film.

But it was dire nevertheless. Not sure how much of the blame for that falls to Costner though

Allegedly wanked himself off infront of a masseuse at the Old Course Hotel.

I don't think I'd ever heard about that. It would normally be John Travolta that I'd think of if you mentioned wanking and masseurs.
