You are allowed to have a scooter. I saw a very old small man earlier, walking in slow motion like he'd had a stroke, he had a pale cream Harrington jacket on and jeans with turn ups, so could have been an original mod from the 1960's, he would applaud your scooter choice.

Mine isn't a Vespa type thing. It's a twist and go job. It DOES have a Puma sticker on it though, inexplicably, so does make it ever so slightly faster than a running man.

There are a couple of old mods in Swansea who always ride around together on their scooters. One of them is a proper vintage 60's one but the other is a more recent one from the eighties. They're always fully attired in parkas and their bikes have all the extra mirrors and lights and a fox tail and everything.

They obviously love it but it looks like a lot of hard work for very little reward to me.

I never quite understood the mirror thing. I was born in 1976 so a bit before my time.

I think the mirrors are there to see all the different vehicles which are going to overtake you because your choice of vehicle is so comically underpowered and slow. Even more underpowered than standard once you've attached two dozen extra headlamps.

Took the scootortoise into town for some errands, and took the scenic route.

I'd absolutely have a scooter if I lived somewhere sunny close to my yacht.

I'd be like Jude Law in Mr Ripley, carefreely scooting down to the village in flip flops and linens to pick ups some prosecco or whatever before taking the butcher's daughter out for a sail on the bay.

We laugh gaily as she clung on through the winding streets, waving cheerfully at the villagers. She'd be blown over by my wealth and complete indifference to it. And my eyes.

Of course later I'd explain to the police that she felt unwell so I dropped her back at the jetty in the town before sailing on my own for the rest of the day. It was the last time I saw her certainly, and I'd tell them I was confused as to why they were questioning me. I'd tell them how I'd lost an anchor when my warp snapped - absolutely nothing to do with her. She wasn't even on board at the time.

Later, I'd send a telegram to father and tell him I was tiring of Amalfi and thinking about getting involved in the family shipping firm.
