Big scooters - Anyone ?

Post by NNK @ Fri Aug 04, 2017 11:36 pm

My Hypermotard has gone, good bike but not as much fun as the Husky and I just cant be trusted with my licence on a big bike (even a relatively lazy one like that).
There are two scooters at home currently, both 50's and I have been hopping on them to whiz to the shops, etc and am enjoying it.
I don't know why but don't feel the need to stick boots and gear on, just helmet and gloves. A 60kmh crash on scooter would prob be the same as on a Ducati but ......

So, not a maxi scooter (Gilera Nexus, Burgman, etc) but a retro ish Vespa (or similar). 250 GTS/300GTS ? I belive they are all injected and some have ABS, etc.
Perfect for around town here and , from reading the web, I gather 100km (distance) on highway wouldn't bother it or me and they can cruise above speed limit .

I know some of you bikers will call me a poof and that doesn't bother me. Its more practicality than pose value .

Or shall I just buy another proper supermotard and cry when I cant feel my nuts after an hour in the saddle ?

I'm a little worried that you have that on your PC Deev, I don't believe for one minute that you searched for it.

Poof!

Right, that's over so my proper answer.

I wouldn't, small wheels & potholes/rough roads don't mix that well. They don't look comfy & I like to ride more distance than you are suggesting. I can see why you would, but no I wouldn't.

I completely agree with your thought process and I keep meaning to buy a scooter.
Problem is, though, that by the time you find one you quite like you are within a thousand pounds of a proper desirable bike and then it starts to feel pointless. My alternative is buying a cheapie decent bike and, leave it on your drive and do exactly the same little journeys with just your helmet on. Works for me. My station car park has about 20 scooters with my fireblade sitting among them like a tiger in a chicken coop

What's your objection to a maxi scooter, out of interest? I've been studying them sideways myself as I can manage to get onto them, and lack of gear changes is useful for my wonky legs too.

I looked at the vespa, but the small wheels worry me. I'd prefer to get something like the newly updated Yamaha xmax400.

If I really wanted to spend silly money on one, the new tmax has been well received by normal bike journos, and I think the Honda X-ADV is actually rather cool. Both in the region of £10K though.

I just don't like the looks of the maxi's GN, I'd never have a pillion (apart from poss dropping son off in town) so don't feel the need for something that big either.

TT - Moneywise it would be close to a decent bike as you suggest but I think I would use it a lot more, just walk out, lift off cover and rise away.
Not pull on leathers, unlock garage, jump start as unused, let idle for 5 mins, pull on helmet, take off leathers to waist as forgotten back protector, think 'why don't I drive" then ride into town 5 mins late for meeting.

ID - that is a lovely looking thing, I presume it has gears ?

Do you not think this looks ok?

The advantage of these over your regular vespa types is of course a decent chassis and the motor not attached to the swingarm. Anyway, can be properly thrown about as well as being easy to use etc.

Sorry to say but I think that looks hideous.
I'd stick with a bike if I was going to have something that big.
Going to ride a Vespa this afternoon.

Oh yes, just rode a Vespa 250GTS, very good I thought.
Ample acceleration, every time I looked down I was speeding, and cruises happily at 110kmh on clock.
I took it down a country lane and it handled fine. Small wheels didn't seem to upset it but I didn't have to crash through any large potholes.

I'm quite taken with the idea now, it was the shops hack and not for sale so they are trying to guide me into a new 300GTS.
Not certain that I want to spend that sort of money but we shall see.

The GTS 300 is about £4.5K here and the dealership I've looked at in L9ndon is doing 0% on them. I do like them, but if I'm getting one I'll want to be able to use it as an all rounder, so 22bhp isn't going to cut it for me.

I tried out one of those three wheeler Piaggio MP3 500s last year, and promptly dropped it. (Wonky legs) - that won't do, as 250Kg is a lot to hold up.

I quite like the Piaggio Beverley 350 (name is APPALLING) as it's a good compromise of size, power, weight and price.

I'd struggle mentally to spend much more than 5 grand on a new scooter I think, so the top end maxis are well out. That Yam Xmax 400 still around the 5K mark though so I'll see.

Keep us posted on the Vespa situation please!

I've been looking for one for ages. In the uk the Primavera is super rare unless it's an Asian import which is more trouble than aids. I can get one in Italy but it's double/triple the price.
This one was on french plates so put off a lot of people.

Yes NNK it has 4 gears.

Well sure, you wouldn't want to waste your time looking at something with left hand drive.

Very true, P. Particularly as it will need left handed tools to maintain it.

I'm shipping it to Italy, when I've made sure everything works perfectly on it, so the LHD won't be a problem.
Also all of my tools in Italy are left-handed.

One advantage this time is you'll have the Channel tunnel so no messing about with those little boats.
