The bloke is driving the scooter kit down from Cambridge on Sunday.
Don't think I'll be doing much until the weather warms up but just so you know it will happen eventually.

The battle has started!

First thing was to remove the six bearings in the engine casings. This involved heating the shit out of them then driving them out with a socket. And then doing that in reverse for the new ones. All went well until I reached the captive bearings. The method here was to heat it until as hot as the sun then slam the engine casing down on the workbench until the bearing popped out."This might take one or two tries. My arse. Eighth go and the casing is like molten lava so I just spat on the the bearing. Hey presto, the bearing is cooled and then falls out.

Here is the captive bearing in the middle of the photo.

In the videos I found on youtube, the whole six bearings in and out took 40 minutes.
It took me 3 hours.
That said I also changed some of the oil seals.

Next thing is to finish the oil seals then change the gear selector and start rebuilding the engine.

Well here's another exciting instalment of the build...

It's gearbox time.
Here's the gear shaft before:
Image
And after
Image

This involved fitting a shim, circlip, 4 gears, a shim and then a circlip.
Thing is the gears can go either way around so 8 variations.
I think I got it around the 4th time because then I could get 2 x 0.15 feeler gauges in either side of the front shim.
Before getting it right it was as tight as my speedos on a topless beach.

Now onto the clutch.
Image
Image

I've disassembled it and the new plates are soaking in gear oil for a few days.
Tomorrow is clutch reassembly day. And maybe other stuff depending on my patience.

Bet you can't wait.

Keep it up, ID. I don't know half of what you're going on about, but I'm fascinated nonetheless.

However, do you think you could take your pictures with something that's not a potato?

I am wearing rubber gloves smeared in grease and trying to take a picture with a phone in a badly lit garage. What the shitting hell do you expect?

Not a bad afternoon really.
Fitted the flywheel
Image

Then the gear cluster and kickstarter spring
Image

Then the kickstarter lever

Image

Then the christmas tree gears

Image

Then the gasket

Image

Then the backplate

Image

Unfortunately that's where the fun stopped as I'm missing a woodruff key for the christmas tree gear shaft- a semi circular piece of metal that goes into a slot on the drive shaft that makes whatever is slid onto it, turn with the shaft. Also the locking tab washer and nut is missing for the same shaft. Once they come I should be ok to close the engine.

Hopefully the photos are a bit better than before as I'm waiting for it to focus before shooting.

Good.

Before you know it, you'll be at the lathe or welder making up your missing parts out of scrap metal lying around.

Yes . Just need to buy a lathe and a welder. And learn how to lathe and weld.

To make a woodruff key all you need is a wee bit of steel and a file, so that's a good place to start. It's also a useful skill because little tiny woodruff keys are always getting lost.
