Well done on getting it done, I keep looking at projects and this has been an inspiration, though probably not enough to actually do anything about it.

Well done ID, never doubted you for a second...

Agree you should get a welder. And a fire extinguisher.

Bought a bench grinder. That should be funny enough when I grind off a finger.
I got a fire extinguisher the day after the fire.

Well done ID.

Now the standard of actually finishing with a running bike is set. Bastard.

Nah, bench grinders are tame. It's angle grinders that leap up and bite you.

Nah, just weld something to something else, seems to fascinate this bunch, like a mirror to a monkey.

Ah. I can do that. I've got an upcoming post in the stuff you've made thread. Unfortunately I ran out of gas for the mig welder on Saturday so can't make any progress at all before Tuesday.

MIG welds aren't supposed to look like that but I'll cover the reason they do when I make the post properly.

I started it myself and rode it for the first time yesterday. Even the neighbours came out to see it start. Engine sounds lovely and rides really well. I am proud of my work!

Anyway, washed it, photographed it and banged it on Ebay. 105 watchers and 3 bids within a few hours. I don't think it'll go for what I want, due to the time of the year, but I just want to get a feel for the market.

Calm down nelly! I've started stripping it and I've already bought a new seat for it.
I have started a notepad on the SIP scooter website.
This is where you put all the parts before putting them in your basket.

It's up to £600 already. Feck!

Having ridden it yesterday I have total confidence in my work. My orange one is faster but this one feels tight and like new in comparison.

It is a bit funny imagining the guy pushing it round to your house to kick your head in when it blows up next week though.

What's the plan for the blue one?

I have taken advice from my car dealer friend. If it blows up and it's my fault (doubtful) then the best thing to do is to offer to buy it back. Punters don't want this so then you offer to split the repair bill and they're quite happy.

I have two ways to go on the blue. I can either do a full resto back to original. This might cost me 2500 incl purchase but will be worth about 5k. My other option is to upgrade the engine, renew all of the running gear but keep the bodywork as is (headstock and engine door will need rubbing back to match) and then put about 10 coats of gloss lacquer on it. From a distance it will look like a rat bike but when you get closer you'll see it's mint. It'll be cheaper to do but I'll only do it if I want to keep it as it'd probably be difficult to sell.

Here's an example:

Hmmm, not sure about the rat look on a Vespa, ID.

Think of it like this... some vehicles are designed/marketed in such a way that they are associates with fashion, glamour (not the porn kind) and style. Think E-Type Jaguar, Ferrari 250 California, Riva speedboad - they'd all be awful if a redneck hillbilly left them in his yard for 30 years, ie the 'rat look'.

So where does the Vespa fit in? Always marketed with a pretty girl, sun-kissed social scenes etc..., so I'd say it's more E-Type than rusty Beetle.

Just my 2p.
