Tell me about motorbikes

Two wheels good.

That's not a standard fit thing on the MT-07, it's a crash bar you can fit. They're specifically advertised for use by driving schools.

I have had a fantastic day today!

After yesterday's monsoon conditions, today was beautiful - crisp and sunny. And even better, the other learner who was supposed to be training with me today didn't turn up, so I got the entire day to myself. Lots more of everything today - fast (70mph) DC stuff, wiggly villages, country lanes, town centre, as well as more manoeuvre practice. On the ER6N to start with, and then back on the crash-barred MT-07 again. I specifically asked about the bars for you GN, but I see it's already been answered - the instructor referred to them as learner bars.

I thought things had pretty much clicked last week during my lesson, but today was totally different again: all the manoeuvres somehow just felt easy - the bike did just what I wanted it to and went just where I wanted it to go. And road stuff felt completely natural. I asked for another go at "the pad" (the practice area that's all coned out like the Mod 1 test) at the end of the afternoon, to reinforce the slalom and 8 and U-turn, but as we went through them all it felt completely unnecessary because the bike just seemed to do them all on its own really.

The instructor said he thought I was absolutely ready for the test and I admit I feel pretty confident. We'll see next week when I don't get a wink of sleep on Thursday night, panicking about the morning.

wi11iam, you should definitely try this you know. It's superb fun.

Oh, also I was talking to some of the CBT learners at lunchtime today. A right mix of people, a young lad, a bloke about my age, and two girls. None of whom had ever ridden before, and none of whom could believe that just a few weeks ago I was in their shoes and suddenly now I've got the big bike test next week. I said it before, but it's astonishing how quickly you can go from never ridden to test. And I haven't even rushed through it.

The two girls were still pootling about on the pad at the end of the afternoon while I had my final run throughs. Apparently not ready to go out on the road yet, which is a shame. One of them was on a Honda Zoomer, which I've always thought looked cool and hilarious fun - but now suddenly looks like a toy for children,

You do make it sound a lot of fun.

Maybe next summer after a stern briefing to stop being a pussy. Until then I’ll lag behind ID and his charmed build.

Failed!

I'm pretty livid with myself, but I felt scrappy and untidy from the start. Then as I finished my controlled stop, somehow I lost balance, leaned the bike too far over and gently put it down. Ridiculous! What a tw@t!

Or as my instructor said afterwards, "look on the bright side. You've just done the fcuking twattiest thing you can do on a bike, so it can only get better from here!"

Retest in two weeks.

Could have been worse. I fell off practising my emergency stop and cheesegrated my back.

Bummer! Bit of a contentious one too really...you were safe and in control and just dropped the bike. I bet you're well annoyed.

I was furious with myself, but no excuses.

I felt so much happier riding back from the test centre though, relaxed and confident - really enjoyed the ride.

I think I have a fear of tests!

If I'd passed today I could have got a Mod 2 date even sooner. Could have been done before the end of November. Nuts!

e: didn't know you used to ride Dibs. Was it long ago?

The Mod 1 is bollocks anyway Datho.

It’s no real test of anything IMO. I rode really well the first time I did mine and was failed for not doing a second look on my U turn. Second time round, I rode really badly - like properly nervous and snatchy- and passed with flying colours because I technically didn’t make any big mistakes. After I had the paper in my hand I told the examiner that it was ridiculous that he was happy to issue a pass based on how badly I rode, and equally a fail on a stupid technicality when I was clearly a competent rider that day. They don’t give a fcuk though.

If it’s any consolation, I sailed through the Mod 2 with no minors on my first go and that’s the important one IMO, unless you live in a car park full of cones.

Kind words, but with an element of truth. I had a smashing ride back after failing, imo quick, confident, safe and wev. Now when I do the retest at least I don't have to worry about failing.

I'm sorry to hear that, Damien! But I can see how knowing what a bad day's motorbiking feels could be helpful.

Sorry to hear that, Datho. What a bummer! It sounds like you’ve had a fab time doing the training though.

If it’s any consolation, I tried to do my CBT once and was utterly shit. It was an icy day and the bikes kept stalling. The instructor clearly thought I was useless and I just got more and more frustrated then kept making stupid mistakes. They wouldn’t let me out on the road in the end and I just gave up and felt awful about it.

If it’s any consolation Datho I laughed out loud at the thought of you slowly resting the bike on the ground.
