Excellent, well done.

And I found a massive difference even between the riding school 500cc and my 600. I distinctly remember being shocked by the difference when I got home from the test and went out on my own bike. It was actually terrifying.

Go and get a couple of test rides on some big bikes then buy something sensible.

The school bike I did the test on was an MT-07, so a 700. That means I'm pretty much forced to get something at least 700 for myself, or it'll feel weedy compared to what I'm 'used' to.

There's a Honda Hornet 900 at a dealer near me. I might do and have a nose at the weekend, if it's still available then.

It’s not all about the cc dath. That mt07 is a twin isn’t it? A fast 600cc in-line 4 would terrify you I suspect. Test ride an R6 and tell us what you think. It redlines 50% higher than the MT with loads more power.

I confess I don't really know much (anything) about how the engine layout affects how the bikes perform. I need to try some things I suppose.

Now I've passed, N's badgering me to go and play on his bikes - which I will do at the first opportunity as I can't wait and they're all amazing. I couldn't tell you what they all are (there's some Ducatis among other things) but they are all going to be terrifying and ridiculous - in spite of how persuasively he tries to convince me they're just like kittens, essentially. "It's not an on / off switch, is it?"

Tell me about it, and how much you want. PM / email if you like.

I went to the local BMW dealer with N this afternoon. Those R9Ts are properly lovely aren't they? Just super.

I've been offered the use of a litre bike, and mate's rates on a Fireblade. And on an R6.

On my phone so won’t go into massive detail but it’s a 749s with lots of extras. Really lovely thing that I’ve had for about 10 years or so now somehow!! Umming and arring about selling but have a little thing on the go that demands time/funds and I don’t use it much at all at the mo.

If you’re interested at all, I’ll get some proper deets and pics together. Probably looking for around £4kish but haven’t checked what it’s worth properly so that’s just a ballpark and would obv do a deal.

I think youll be fine. You can pootle around on any fast bike in exactly the same way as a mt07. You choose how fast you go and given the fact we're all old, roadwise and a touch sensible then you probably wont get in too much trouble.
The biggest surprise will be the riding position. You'll feel like you are almost laying down on the bike.

Because of the leaning so far forwards that TT describes sports bikes can be tough on your wrists if you are just pootling around at low speed though. At higher speeds the airflow against your chest takes some of the pressure off.

I'm going to some local dealers tomorrow, to have a sit on a few bikes and perhaps maybe some rides.

I don't really know what to expect, whether you can tell anything about a bike from a few minutes biffing about, or not. But we'll see.

I'll have a look at some pocket money things, as well as some more expensive financey ones - but I don't want to spend too much money on something I might easily drop or break or get bored of, but be stuck with because I'm still paying for it.

I could have sworn I replied to this post the afternoon you made it. But I can't see my reply here now. I can't imagine it's internet fairies, so I must have not posted. Weird! Something along the lines of "thanks! I'm going to have a look at a few things, and then might be in touch depending how I get on".

As things stand, I've never been on a sports bike at all, so don't know whether the riding position etc would be something I fancy or not. I'm going to have a few sit-ons.

You know how sometimes budget creeps?

Well my budget has jumped up and run away out the door.

And due to Kawasaki's desperation to punt tiny-miles ex-loan bikes at 0%, I can jump onto a bike I tried today for essentially pence.

It's a z650, which looks (to my eyes) ace, is a horrid naked (which I really like), is new and ABSed and digi-dashed, and is small and wieldy enough for me to straddle flat footed and pitch about like it's nothing. They do it in this really rather brilliant satin colour called covert green.

Only permissible if you never ever under any circumstances refer to it as covert green again. Dark Green, matt green, No problem. But covert green is just so cringe
