That’s a wellnice bike. I know nothing about them but that’s the one I’d choose too.

Looks great. Having never ridden a proper motorbike on the road, I confidently predict it will be an excellent balance of performance and light weight resulting in decent straight-line speed, excellent handling and some trouser wetting.

I only know as much about bikes as anyone who suddenly became increasingly interested six months ago. If you don't know from the picture, it's a Triumph Daytona 675, which obv has only a 675cc engine - which is smaller than one of the bikes I learned to ride on (Yamaha MT07), and only marginally larger than the other one I learned to ride on (Kawasaki ER6N). However, it is more powerful than either.

This is an 08 MY bike, direct from a Triumph main dealer who are delivering it for me once they've serviced and MOTed it. I haven't ridden it yet, but the dealer sent me an exhaustive personalised video walk round of the bike, highlighting every single scratch and scuff. A friendly motorcyclist I know (yes, him) also watched the video for me, and concurred that it appeared to be a cracker. It has sports exhaust, carbon tank pads, crash bungs, engine covers and some etcs, including (annoyingly) a dark tinted screen.

From what I understand, the Daytona has the benign handling and balance of a beginner bike, coupled with the goolies and performance of a sports bike. It also looks the absolute tits I think.

Datho - that is an excellent choice. Never ridden one, but literally every single journo that rode and reviewed it actually loved the engine and the chassis and were amazed that Triumph, almost out of nowhere, were capable of producing something that competes (and beats) with the Japanese in the mid-size sports bike market. And the consensus is that its a damn shame they’re not producing a current version.

That’s quite a lot of bike though for your first so enjoy but assume that everyone else on the road is a moron trying to kill you. And remember to let your tyres warm up before leaning it over too much.

You’re going to have such a blast.

Also, and you may already know this, but you know that episode of Braquo in (I think) the second series where some baddies do a drive by from a blue sports bike? If memory serves then it was one of them as I seem to remember it kindling a rush of Daytona-considering in me.

So, not only can you have an incredibly good bike, you can charge around Paris assassinating folk on it, like a surly French special forces baddie!

Oh! Doesn't look like I'm buying that Daytona after all.

The dealer phoned me yesterday to say they had found a discrepancy in the paperwork while they were preparing it for me. Apparently, the clocks were changed for 'some reason' previously, and the mileage is close to twice what they believed it was. That makes me nervous, and I won't buy something I'm nervous about.

However. I am now back to the Autotrader Bikes drawing board and having a bit more of a think. And my thinking is that it's plain I got a bit over excited with possibilities, and my rational ape-brain thinks the Daytona was probably more bike than I might comfortably handle as a pure beginner. So I'm looking at humbler things (even though N always says I should buy the funnest thing I can afford!): which means I need suggestions again from experienced types, for a decent beginner big bike.

And if I think back to my original train of thought for this whole thing, it wants to be: economical, powerful enough to keep me out of the way of idiots but not so powerful that I kill myself or lose my newly-minted licence in five minutes, new enough, reliable, decent-looking, and in budget*.

*because I've also decided that while, yes, I can get finance and the world is my bike oyster, I am going to buy something from actual real money that I own. Which means a fixed budget, albeit one that's bigger than I said right at the start - for two reasons. I don't want to buy a shitty old ruin, and it turns out I own more money than I thought I did.

Suggest!

ps: while it's blaters a beginner bike, I'm wordering about a CBR500. Because it fulfils all my criteria, and frankly I am actually blaters a beginner.

You won’t feel like a beginner for long though and that bike will be shit I reckon, despite looking acceptable.

When TT and I passed our tests (same month), I was thinking like you and looking at more beginners bike and he went and bought a Thundercat which was a 600cc sports tourer and quite big. I thought he was mental and then rode it, loved it and bought one too. After a year I started to upgrade to better stuff as even that felt a bit lethargic (even though I managed to top it out at about 160 (probably not accurate but it did give me a nosebleed).

So in short, don’t buy a beginner bike unless you have no interest in having fun.

OK, points taken.

Also on my thinklist are:

CB650

CBR600F

or if I'm feeling brave, another, different Daytona

Irritating sitch, now that I've got money in my pocket and insurance sorted etc. I literally want to make a phone call to somewhere and buy something TODAY.

Again, I know fcuk all about bikes...but don't buy one where the swingarm is just a big piece of box-section. I want to see a monocoque or something tubular.

Oh, what a complete pisser! I feel your pain in wanting things immediately!
Still. At least the dealer spotted the problem.
Can't really advise on beginner bikes, only that when I started it was small & a gradual work upwards. But this was the 80's and I spent most of the time pissed, so in retrospect I'd certainly have killed myself on anything remotely powerful...I think.
Nowadays there's a slightly different mindset along with bikes having better everything. As long as you're sensible with your right hand, I'm sure you don't need a 'beginners' bike. No matter what you're riding, you will still have all the same hazards (some more you'll learn to anticipate with experience).

I'm out of touch with bikes these days, so hence can fully recommend this as the best choice (again):
