KM Living Room Hi Fi Challenge

Post by CJ+ @ Fri Mar 17, 2017 4:45 pm

I looked at those ludicrous £12K speakers which are in a horrid room and are probably used to listen to something awful and wondered - what would happen if I made a phile like KM into my personal hi fi shopper, gave him a fixed budget which if he exceeds I will imprison him in Rod's bumdungeon, and bade him go buy me a system to my specification?

So, KM!

Here's three piles of money - £500, £1000, and £2000 - and you must go out shopping and buy three systems with them. You can't push the piles together or borrow from one pile to another or anything like that.

The spec is the same for all three systems: I want to play CDs and take inputs from other things (like a computer or the telly). I'm not interested in ludicrous 7.1.1.1.1 home virtual surround theatre nonsense - good old-fashioned stereo will be fine. I don't want a record player or a tape deck (not even with high speed dubbing). Please include a good set of comfy over-ear headphones for late-night listening.

New or pre-owmed?
I bought a good Yamaha amp from Ebay a couple of years ago, it's now worked flawlessly for thousands of hours since then, anecdotal but still.

I get the feeling you'd be better asking a normal person Ceej. I think KM hears sounds like that chap in The Matrix sees the Matrix. Have you heard his wizard dying?

He might be a Ginger Terror, but he has a point.

Dear Teeks, what plastic should Fox's use in their biscuit tin?

Dear TSex, which brand of plaster for the double skin flap method of on-site amputation?

Dear TT, which fishing rod should I use to transfer my goldfish from this bowl to this slightly larger bowl?

Like all of the above, I'm used to using the stuff for a rather different purpose and on a rather different scale. What is "good" to me won't necessarily be "good" to another as unlike TS's Elastoplast, it's a subjective thing.

However I shall have a go.

Just crib from What Hi-Fi's website KM. No-one will ever know.

Edit - this post is only for KM. No-one else is allowed to read it.

Did you sneer at its paltry thinness and laugh at how it'd never properly protect baked goods nor stop the crumbs from going fcuking everyyyyywheeeere?

Laugh! I'd love to see someone using a fishing rod to move a goldfish between bowls.

Cheap. You want the Focal Grande Utopia EM. Over two metres tall, weighing 260kg and costing a mere £110,000.
