ITunes needs updating every few days, and requires you to restart your computer to take effect. For music it works alright with the match option paid for, but you can get free cloud storage from other companies and without match it will randomly loose ten years worth of albums you spent many hours ripping from CD and leave you with only a few random purchases from the iTunes store which you now regret buying and the free U2 album you've never listened to.

I've never had that happen. I've been using it since the first iPod and have heard people curse it's very name since about then too but I seem to have been lucky. I switch it on and my music is there and I can play it and move it to my phone easily. In fact, I almost never connect my phone now and just download stuff directly to it.

It's slow. It's clunky. It has an insatiable appetite for updates. When the iTunes installer gets corrupted and won't install them that's a lot of fun.

It has some very weird little naming rules you have to work out if you want your music to appear "just so".

Thank God I very rarely have to use it nowadays. Every time I do I sense of dread comes over me though.

Is it a PC thing? (gone mad, hahahahahaha)

I use it on the Mac so have never had issues with installers and corruptions and all that sort of nonsense.

God, PC's are just awful! Take a look at yourselves.

It is not a political correctness thing, no. I have lots of urban music in my iTunes library.

Maybe it works better on a Mac but on a Windows PC/laptop (maybe deliberately by MS?) I've found iTunes to consistently be the most wilfully dreadful piece of software I've ever used. And I include shonky freeware developed by a bloke in a basement. It crashes even more than it updates and freezes so often as to make it unusable for large jobs of adding/sorting/changing music.

I heart Apple physical products and the interface on iPhone/Pad/ATV is a breeze but my word I loathe iTunes. Like Greg any time I'm forced to use it I know it's going to make me cross and it never disappoints.

To underline the point, I've just fired it up at work.

First, it told me a new version is available for download. Well, no surprise there.

Secondly it told me it's not the default player for stuff. It matters not whether I fix this because as soon as I download a new version it reverts to this setting. Sigh.

Third, it decided to load the music library that belongs to someone else on our work network. That must be the Genius feature at work.

What. A. Piece. Of. Utter. Shit.

And yet it works perfectly for me, albeit in limited form. I rarely get updates, though. Maybe one every other month? Is that the new definition of "insatiable"? No wonder your wife is so frustrated, Greg.

One can only presume, Dis, that they >waves hand disdainfully in the general direction of them< are doing it wrong.

Ceej, you have to remember that Kungers and I live in the south of England. Where we have a thing called broadband. It makes the "internet" fast.

Up where you and Dis live, in the barren and primitive north, I realise that dial up modems are still quite novel and that most of you think that Ceefax is the internet.

That's why you northern types are spared the full horrors of iTunes, you see. It just wouldn't work for you.

Unless your so-called "broadband" is faster than 160Mbps, it's slower than mine.

I think you've been sold some magic bean.

Or you're measuring in pre-decimal money, which is more likely I suppose.

That's alright, petal. I'm typing slowly, so your internet can keep up.

I didn't know where to put this, so I'll put it here:

I phoned ee to cancel my wife's phone contact because I'd decided I could get a better deal elsewhere. They were so desperate to keep me that they offered me discounted prices until I accepted this -

Unlimited texts, unlimited calls, 2gb data, 12 month contract, £7.49

I think that's quite good isn't it? Someone tell me it is. Or not, as I'm still in the cooling off period.

That's quite a bit less than I'm stumping up to O2 for pretty much exactly that deal.

Does ee have any coverage though? That's quite important, I think.

£7.49 per month or for the whole 12 months?

Also I saw Sony are launching a new Experia phone, which can film in super slow-mo, 960 frames per second. Not sure how useful that is but still amazing that phones can do these things now.

I'm with EE. I get 12gb unlimited and unlimited and all of it can be used in the EU. It costs £19:99 a month.

It's been fine for us (I've been with them for years and never have any trouble).

That sounds very good value, but it's almost three times as expensive. We have broadband and wifi at home though, so your extra gbs might not be such a clincher.

If she's not bothered about the data I'd say that's a pretty good deal. EE seem to be one of the better networks for coverage too, my work phone is on EE and I'm rarely without signal.

My personal phone is on 3 which from experience is the only network that beats EE. I pay £24 a month, unlimited data, unlimited texts, 200 minutes, 30GB of tethered data.

True. I don't have broadband at home so I need the GB's for porn medical research.

How does it possibly work? Fair enough it's a minimal bundle, but free?

You will burn through 200MB of data more-or-less instantly, just with FB and email and looking at pictures of cats, and then you will receive the very-much-not-free excess data charges.

ETA: you have to install their app. I am instantly suspicious.

I was wondering about it for my son, instead of a PAYG sim, so he can have one of our old phones in his pocket while he's out and about (in case of emergency).

So he wouldn't need data, but of course if it's there I suppose he'd soon rack up some excess usage.
