What television should I buy

Post by HappyGoLucky @ Fri Jan 15, 2016 9:46 am

As I have acquired new accommodations, I want need a new telly.

It's got to be a minimum 40" and be smart with good picture and sound other than that, I have no idea what I want, but and it's a big one... MrsHGL doesn't I don't want to spend too much on it.

Recommend me a really good telly for next to nothing please. I'll be shopping for it in the morning so need answers fast please.

Gotta run, supposed to be helping with the move!

LG/ Sony,

4K, Smart,
40 inch

High Contrast ratio,
Show the blacks up in the best light

Mandela
Er,..

How on earth do people really review TVs by model number?

They only way I like one now is by the way it looks. Not even the image quality. Just the way the thing physically looks.
You know, prreeeeeeety ones which are really thin and seem to float in a glow of buy-me-now.

Image quality between comparable spec TVs seems hocus pocus to me.
The remotes usually all suck balls- universally complicated and/or flimsy. The ones with phone-app remotes can suck my dick. No way I am resorting to my phone to change volume.
The sound out of all of them is shite, so that's always outsourced to component audio.

Like Barb said, you can't really expect the sound from a TV to be up to much. I run mine through the hi-fi and it's night and day in quality. If I were you I'd go to Currys or somewhere similar where all the TVs are lined up next to each other, make a shortlist then see whether I could save some cash buying online.

Bugger, I was hoping for a universal chorus of buy an XXX so I could just order it without having to brave the hoardes of Singaporeans out for a Saturday shuffle round the shops to see what I'm getting.

fcuksticks.

If you hear news reports of a foreigner going postal in an electrical shop in Singapore this weekend, it'll probably be me.

I have a few mates who have ultra-ultra HD tellies, sharpened to a fine point.

I can't stand watching them. It took me ages to work out why.

It's because the picture on the screen is sharper than any and everything else in the room. It looks completely unrealistic as a result.

Samsung and LG, in particular, suffer from this.

For me: Panasonic or Sony.

And never trust how they look in the shop, because they will have the settings set spastically bright and over coloured. And too sharp.

If you just want porn it's better to just stream it online for free these days. Buying it is only for people looking for real niche stuff.

I would only buy from John Lewis personally.

Your online telly breaks on day 360, what are you going to do? Post it back to cheaptellies.com?

The reason I've moved from my apartment to a house is that MrsHGL is coming over too, so I'm no longer geographically single and have therefore cancelled my subscription to donkeyporn.com

I have a 42" Panasonic. It looks great.

Make alternative arrangements for sound, as the built-in speakers are naffer than Rod's record collection.

(I have a Razer Leviathan (oh god why are this company's products so stupidly named?) sound bar being driven from the optical output of the XB1). Chose this product because it's shorter than most sound bars and I have limited space in the telly cubby.

Got a 42" Panasonic in the end but had run out of shopping tolerance to think about additional sound stuff for it.

There's also a considerable debate raging on exactly where it's going to go so we'll have to rearrange the furniture 6 different ways until we agree my way was right in the first place.

No one does domestically, only pro screens these days. Domestic choices are LCD, LED-LCD or OLED.

OK, so just as I land in Jo'burg having left MrsHGL nestled on sofa with strict instructions to do nothing but grow bloodcells and watch crap tv. We've just had themother of all storms that has blown up the bloody TV.

I can order one and get it delivered, but I usually reseach the shot out of these things before I buy and I don't have the luxury of time.

So nice people of CTF, what TV should I get - the one that blew up was a 42" Panasonic Viera - I think the replacment should be a 50" at least.

Panasonic are always a safe buy

If you buy a 50", won't it have to wait for installation until you get back as it will need new mount. But if you stick with 42" could she or a friend do it more easily?

If you can afford/justify an OLED set at that size, get one. Otherwise select the by the size you want and then work 'up to' or 'down from' your budget depending on whether you want to be tight or a brand snob. Simple :)

It's freestanding on an old altar table so no additional effort required.

Someone suggested I get an Android TV, but I'm not sure what the benefits are over a normal TV?

Panasonic because at least she won't have to learn a new remote control.

As for model, find the cheapest 50 inch. (Women say that size doesn't matter blah blah extra inches blah. )
Anyway, as tech as that. The cheapest. Because whatever you buy it's newer so will be better and you won't notice in a few days anyway.

Define "met".

Oh I see.

Probably not but I've had girlfriends (I really have ok!) and have experienced the crisis that new tech brings.

Whatever you decide on, buy the next size up.

I wanted 55" wife wanted 65".

We got 65" and now I wish I had the next size up.

It's going to be somewhere between a 50 or 60, I don't want or need it to be massive.

I'm wondering about the difference between these two - aside from the size obvs.

This Panasonic. or This one.
