DDOS attack and emails

Post by Careless Whisperer @ Thu Sep 15, 2016 9:21 am

My email provider is apparently suffering a DDOS attack, so the servers are down at the moment while they resolve it. I can live with that for now, but will I eventually receive emails that were sent while the servers were down or will they be lost in the ether?

Hate computery things.

They should be queued and will be sent in the fullness of time.

unless as part of their mitigation they've cleared the queues, in which case they'll be lost.

Messages aren't queued at the receiving MX though, they're queued at the sending MX which the ISP will have no control over.

If the receiving MX isn't talking, the sending MX won't send them.

So win-win!

Or they'll bounce, in which case lose-lose.

So you might get your emails, CW, or you might not. Who knows?

It might well do, it depends on the MTA and its retry settings.

Well the only obvious time gap I can see without receiving any emails is overnight. Fortunately I don't do any international business and I'm the most likely person in my work environment to be emailing at silly hours, so it looks like nothing has caused me any problems. Whoop.

I realize that this is slightly older and the issue has been resolved, but I would caution to perhaps change providers. Of course there are always attack risks, but a service provider should be taking all of the necessary counter measures to ensure their customers' protection. It doesn't seem like they are doing this. This article outlines some of the counter measures you can take at the end of the article; of course you only have control over what you can do on your own, not what your service provider should be doing. Perhaps one bad experience isn't enough to make you switch, but I would keep it in mind if I were you.
