PC remote control/desktop

Post by Deuteronomy @ Wed Mar 22, 2017 10:41 am

Quite often I'm away during the week, this means that when my wife has trouble with her PC (which is often) I have to talk her through what to do (which will lead to divorce I'm quite sure).

I need some sort of app/web thing that will allow me to take control or at least view her desktop.

When at home I use remote desktop to control the server and it works perfectly, I've always assumed this would be a ballache to set up when using via the internet?

Tell me options.

I've used Teamviewer with no problems.
A company we use, used it to fine tune some software on my pc and just connected and wizzed around the screen looking at my porn changing things and settings and stuff.

Used TeamViewer yesterday with some success.

But before you buy it, I'm *pretty* sure you can do remote control over Skype? I'd need to check but have a memory of doing this in the past...

Teamviewer, though be aware some ISPs are now blocking it which is silly. I still just use RealVNC

You just need a second laptop pointed at her PC then you could see her screen through Skype.

I use http://www.noip.com/

Sign up, you can do it free but you need to confirm your hostname every 30 days or you can go enhanced for about £20 a year). Pick a hostname (i.e. deuteronomy.ddns.net), install the little client on the pc and log it on then when you're away just use RDP.

I'll second this. I have it set up for my 82 year old mother. I have a saved icon on her desktop marked HELP. She launches it, gives me the session code and then i have control. Easy.

This sounds good. I need something like this for my mother (similar age). I used to use Logmein until it became paid. I tried facetime with her pointing the camera at the screen - fcuk me that was infuriating. I either had a view of her ear or of the left quarter of the screen.

"Go right, go right, go right! Ok, hold it there - don't move"

Instantly swings left again.

Having to do a house call because "the websites don't work" (she'd changed her homepage to something unfamiliar) is not acceptable.

It's free and works as well as any others I've used including professional paid for solutions.
