What do you rate most in a photo?

Post by Disastrous @ Sat Jun 08, 2019 12:23 pm

Had an interesting discussion about this in the office this week. Interestingly, amongst 7 camera people, there were very different opinions.

1 guy was mad for detail. All his favourite photos were macro or landscapes taken at extraordinary resolutions. Almost like he admired the tech more than the photo

1 girl was all about colour

1 girl was about composition

1 guy was all about people/faces

1 guy was mad on light

1 girl was for ‘magic moments’ (she loved your lightning strike Bodhi)

I like compositions and colour but recently got a photobook that’s all clever use of natural light and that really worked so maybe I’m moving towards light.

Thought it was interesting that even amongst a kid of folk doing it for a living, there was near total disagreement on what the best photo was as a result. In fact, most of my favourites weren’t really about the camera at all whereas the detail guy’s were all about the equipment (IMO).

What do you like and why?

Subject.

You can take the most technically perfect photo of a kettle but it’s still just a kettle.

There’s been a couple posted on our village FB page which were technically a bit shit, but I liked them:

One of my favourite photographers is Stefan Boman who regular produces things like this which (to my eye at least) is technically perfect and is a brilliant subject:

Agreed. Not many photos they don’t improve.

You know that awful one of the vulture next to the starving child? Imagine if it was just perched on a pair of tits instead.

Composition for me.

When I take a picture I always consider the composition. It’s something my wife doesn’t think about *at all* and it drives me nuts.

For her it’s 100% about the subject. Just point and shoot at a person and the church spire behind is chopped in half.

Light second.

In one word, light. I love portraits using natural light creatively.

It's art innit, so no matter how many 'rules' you lay down and technicalities specified, if you don't feel it then it's shit (to you, but not necessarily the next person).
