Didn't I hear/read that this was the first such photo?

Still prefer the Earth-rise photo though

That looks like it's been 'shopped a bit.

I think this is how the original should look. I'm sure there are more than just this one though, but I remember this as being a favoured school study poster.

I think they are just different examples of several photos taken at the time. Prefer yours though

In fairness, the Tokyo Sexwale mask I made was pretty disturbing too.

Brilliant quote from the artist though:

The biggest criticism I’ve had is actually from animal-lovers who say that pigs are lovely creatures and should never be compared to a man like Trump. It’s a fair point.

This one rather got me. I think because it's reminiscent of such a familiar feeling in kinder circumstances, carrying a child to spare them tired legs or save them waking up or whatever.

"A Syrian refugee kisses his daughter as he walks through a rainstorm towards Greece's border with Macedonia, near the village of Idomeni, Greece." Taken by Yannis Behrakis and one of Reuters photos of the decade so sorry in advance if it's already cropped up somewhere.

Excuse my cynicism Span, but my immediate reaction is that it is staged. Why would you walk down the middle of the road carrying your child? You wouldn't

That was also my first reaction and it detracts from an otherwise powerful shot.

Towards a border, maybe it's a bit different? I don't know, I've seen less plausible news photos.

There is an account of this picture at the end of the photographer's obituary, from his producer:

Oh jeez louise! Both of you now. Honestly.

I bet you don't believe there's a camp at Calais. You're all 'why on earth would you go camping there? It looks dreadful. Fake!!'

Obv I have never been a refugee walking towards a border, but i can't see any reason why it should be different.

From the link
"On the way to the border we saw these refugees and he started taking pictures. After a while I said 'OK, let's go'. He said 'No, no, wait, I don't have the picture.' I was waiting in the car and he eventually came back and said 'OK, I have the picture.' He was looking for this picture."

Behrakis' description of the image was typically unorthodox.

"I would love to be this father; I think every child would love to have a father like this," he explained.

Does sound a bit like once his mate had gone he set it up. ANd lets be fair it is a lot more dramatic a photo than if he was at the edge

I would like to believe it is completely authentic, but I'm afraid I can't

Without the context of what's immediately in front of the subject it's impossible to call. So calling it fake is really just defaulting to cynicism. It's been shot on a long lens too (upwards of 200mm on a full-frame), so that will condense the scene, which might make the position of the subject seem more isolated (and odd) than it really is.

If he said to an approaching refugee 'would you mind awfully carrying the wee lass and walking down the middle of the road?' would that make it any less real?

This is definitely staged, but still moving:

Fair point Paul. And I know lots of such photos are at least partially staged.,

But yes, it does detract from a bit for me

I think the story with that Rosenthall flag shot is that he saw them raising it but didn't like the composition, so he arranged them in a more pleasing manner.

That's not how I read it. Just that he managed to capture an iconic photo, not that he set it up.

fwiw I don't think it's staged however I did think "why is he walking down the middle of the road?"

I agree - it looks a bit 'Kevin Costner', which will always detract from an otherwise powerful moment.

But it's the isolation that creates the power. If he was on the pavement with a load of other refugees, milling about holding plastic bags, smoking and generally filling space behind him there would be less impact.
