Not sure if this is a bit naff, but I genuinely felt very sad seeing this pic.

I remember loving that video of the Correspondents Dinner five years ago when Seth Meyers and Obama were so scathing of the fully-deserving Trump, right in the midst of the horrible birther thing. About Trump's hilarious plans to run for President, and We All Laughed as he sat there looking furious.

I'm sure the photo has had the exact opposite reaction from Trump's supporters - they must think it's wonderful comeuppance - but in the context of Obama and Trump's history together, this picture makes me feel quite gutted.

I am a little bit haunted by this picture on a much broader scale than their relationship. The symbolism and historical significance is massive.
8 Years ago Obama became the first black president of a country to whom black people were once commodities. It was indicative of a giant leap of civilisation from what is/should be the greatest country in the world. In turn he achieved relatively incredible progression with things like Obamacare.
Fast forward now and they have elected the most backwards racist president in my lifetime and perhaps since slavery itself. Its just a tragedy I think.

I thought they were all chained below deck when on ship, I guess that practice died out over the years?

Can't say I've much knowledge of the progress in the slave trade, expect our RN spent a couple of hundred years fighting it & that always gets forgotten.

I think it'll end up as an excuse for Putin to continue to destabilise things around there.

Nah, they've not hung the pictures properly, unless of course they are the work of our esteemed art photographer A. Ansel in which case they're probably the right way up.

The dead guy is the Russian ambassador to Ankara, shot by the guy with the gun whilst opening a gallery yesterday.

The bloke who shot the ambassador looks quite like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever in this picture. Whether that was the point he was trying to make I don't know, because I don't speak Turkish.

It's incredibly striking isn't it? I think it's the fact that it's in a gallery, plus the odd way the ambassador doesn't really look 'dead', and the way the suit makes the killer look like something from a fashion spread... it's all really 'arty'.

He was saying "What about Aleppo, what about Syria" which are fair questions given recent events.

ETA- I don't speak Turkish either, that is just what I have read.

Pity he was one of those "shoot first, ask questions later" sort of guy.

I saw Franz Ferdinand footage and the rant afterwards yesterday. The shooter's index finger seems extraordinarily long. Like ET's digit.

Good spot. I didn't notice that at first but now that I look again it's obvious.

The idea that one day man might travel that far to see that view with his own eyes is still an astounding thought to me.

This picture was taken by Hilda Clayton. The blast was a mortar shell that exploded during a training exercise and it killed her and 4 Afghans.

Image

This picture of the same explosion was taken by one of the Afghans that died.

There's a good row abut that on the PH photography forum at the moment.

It was posted on a 'camera can capture some fantastic moments' thread and a load of people have got all angry that it's not a picture of a hippo grinning or some other shit.

Incredible image, tragically obtained. Up there with the Turkish gallery assassin for me. Is it a video still frame??

I can imagine the PH buffoonery over the semantics of the word 'fantastic' taken strictly to mean only things that are wildly positive, while anyone with any emotional awareness would understand that it should be taken to mean remarkable or poignant.

It is an excellent PH row, made all the better because there are a group of PH dicks lambasting the poster for having posted a picture which is not what the thread is all about, yet those same PH dicks haven't clocked who started vol 1 of the self same thread...

While the image of someone striding around a live battlefield with collecting net and bell jar is wonderfully Edwardian, one can't help but feel he might have had a more pressing job to do?
