Thought about spoilerling this because upsetting, but upsetting thread is upsetting, I'll put it down the page instead,

Although that's not the original, of course. In the real one she hasn't had a hijab MSPainted onto her, but someone thought this was the appropriate thing to do. Shrug.

Irish Navy had a corvette out there, helping out. One of the stories that's filtered back is recovering the corpses of a woman and her new born baby, sill connected by the umbilical cord.

I don't think they understand what a placenta is.

Dunno. Baby connected to umbilical, umbilical to placenta, placenta still inside mother's corpse.

Not really any less grim, is it?

Sort of related to SM's picture here is the front page of Bild, Germany's biggest selling tabloid.

Yeah, maybe it's because Germans have (just about still) a living memory of being refugees & losing a war they have more empathy for Syrians, I don't know.

(I never noticed that MSpaint job Pq, but now feel foolish for posting it, a bit).

Sorry Strawms, I wasn't having a go. I saw it on Twitter yesterday because people were making a fuss about the Paintjob, but otherwise I might not have noticed it either. The main point of the picture is preserved and it's just as moving as the other version.

The alphabet (and digits) found in the patterns on butterflies wings, more surprising than moving, but I put it here. H is a bit rubbish but W and 5 are good.

It seems to depict that the slaves are a sea of non-human black living mass, indistinct, housebroken and ready to obey. Maybe exactly how they were regarded back then.

Not sure of the history of this image but it is likely the Omanis on the left are the slavers since they were still doing this into the !940s in Oman and Zanzibar

Not sure if this is a bit naff, but I genuinely felt very sad seeing this pic.

I remember loving that video of the Correspondents Dinner five years ago when Seth Meyers and Obama were so scathing of the fully-deserving Trump, right in the midst of the horrible birther thing. About Trump's hilarious plans to run for President, and We All Laughed as he sat there looking furious.

I'm sure the photo has had the exact opposite reaction from Trump's supporters - they must think it's wonderful comeuppance - but in the context of Obama and Trump's history together, this picture makes me feel quite gutted.

I thought they were all chained below deck when on ship, I guess that practice died out over the years?

I'm more curious as to why the ship has a white Everest UPVC conservatory,.

They wanted to fit the best presumably, and were concerned that there was a risk that someone might try to swing a medicine ball on the end of a rope into the window.
