Taken any good pictures lately?

Happy snappers.

I bought some of those lenses you clip onto a phone. Fish eye and 2 macro (x12 & x24). It cost a whole tenner and comes in a little pouch that you could sling in your pocket but won't.

Fish eye is fun but maybe more suited to video. Macros need a bit of practice but they're far better than expected. Certainly reasonable for a phone (6S)

Pretty good. I fact pretty very good for a mobile!
I've been playing with my Sigma 105mm Macro over the last few days and the trouble is that the focal sensitivity is on a hair. I don't end up with anything colossally better than the above really. ..a bit sharper & a slightly better DOF, but that's £300 for you!
I think it'll be heading for eBay if it doesn't jolly well sort itself out!!

Tripod?
Flash?
Lens not wide open?
Manual focus using zoomed in live view?

Shouldn't be that bad Monts.

ETA: Can you calibrate lenses on your camera? Cant remember which model you have? I did it with one of mine and it made a huge difference. To auto focus obviously, not manual focus.

I've tried all of the above.
That particular lens is renowned for having a hair trigger. Don't get me wrong, it's not that bad, but it's enough for me not to be particularly excited about using it...in fact I keep forgetting I have it such is it's use! After my 500mm lens purchase feel I perhaps ought to just get rid of the macro lens...but then I don't really need to...and, well...you never know...

Not bad but that's all you'll do with it, other than a dead fly at some point.

That's rather impressive for a phone camera.

Impressive.

I once bought a fixed 50mm lens and a step down ring that allowed me to screw it backwards onto the front of a regular lens. Really cool macro set up. Except after ten minutes I'd photographed everything I'd ever want to with it.

Ditto fish eye. Have a lovely Sigma 15mm fish eye. Never used it after the initial flurry of "ooo, look at that".

Took this last night which I was quite pleased with:

Image

Mostly from the trail caused by the plane landing/taking off (can you tell from the flight path which it is??) in the background.

Also, a question for any techy photographers here:

See the two red lights to the left of the photo? When you zoom in, they have a strange, slightly dappled quality to them, as if they have distorted slightly. It looks different to the usual perfectly smooth stars round lights that I normally get when I take a long exposure. What is causing it? It's a lens I've used several times for long exposure stuff but I think this is probably as long as I've ever taken - 30 seconds or so...

At first I wondered if it might have been because it was a windy night but everything but the lights seems pretty sharp.

That dappling - which is actually over the whole picture - looks rather like the rippling artifacts you get from noise reduction algorithms being pushed quite hard. If so, it's the camera, not the lens.

Great pic.

Hmm, it's not in-camera as I shoot RAW and have all that switched off...I did a *bit* of NR in Lightroom but I shot at ISO100 so there wasn't much at all and I'm pretty sure it was present in the RAW.

I'll export an unedited JPG of the RAW later and post it up...annoying if it's something in-camera.

That's over 32mb so you'll all just have to make do with a JPG rendered straight off the RAW:

Image

Annoyingly, if you zoom in the dappling effect on the light is actually prismatic looking, which suggests it's the lens?

It's probably asking a lot of the lens - those lights are very intense and they are well off-centre.

It's a Canon EF-M 18-55. Now cross with myself as I had much nicer glass in the bag but not for the focal length I was after. That particular lens has worked brilliantly for long exposure stuff I've done in the past, albeit never *that* long. Grrr....

You won't see it in the RAW but look behind the tower in the processed one...

Take off I think as it is steeper nearer the ground. For landing I'd expect to see the glide path get shallower as the pilot flared before touchdown.
