I don’t think I could have been any quicker with a compact.

Definitely not quicker but you could have zoomed in closer and got a better focus.

That’s pin sharp you awful shit!

It's tt he just throws around technical terms like focus with nary a concern for what they mean, I think he meant you could have more of the bird and less of the background in the shot.

Last year my wife swore blind that some parrots were in our garden. I ridiculed her enough for her to find that story about them escaping from Pinewood but, obv, I refused to back down.

Then one day we were in traffic in Egham on our way to Heathrow (LHR) and a flock circled the car about half a dozen times, the point proving bastards.

I don't! Well I meant that as well. But it just isn't properly in focus. It is whatever the opposite of pin-sharp is.
Marshmallow blunt.
Or maybe its just not something or other. But basically the edges of the bird are blurry etc.

Very strange that this was last year. Anywhere from Windsor down the M3 corridor is absolutely riddled with them. I reckon if I spend a day in Berkshire I would see more parakeets than sparrows on average.

I know it is. I only posted that because at 50m in the gloomy shade with lots of foliage you wouldn't have got anything at all with a DSLR.
Yours is at 20m taken on a bright day with a clear shot and it is only marginally better!

Through some buildings too, no doubt.

I'm curious about the decision making process around your chosen composition for that shot Dis.

Any reason why the bird is jauntily off-centre? I don't think any part of the bird is centre-frame. Perhaps its genitals are closest; it's hard to say for sure.

I have a pathological hatred of ‘the rules’ around composition.

It’s a crop, obviously, and I find centre frame to be aesthetically unpleasing, like rule of thirds landscapes. I prefer symetrical centre horizons.

It’s after midday Stuart so I doubt you are in any state to judge what’s in focus!

Besides, the point is not that I claim a perfect photo of a bird. My point is that I took a quick snap in challenging conditions of a fast moving subject with an slr, and got a much better result than TT’s orange shitter, thus making the case for an slr over a compact.

Dis, I'm totes on board with the DSLR is better than a compact thing, and yes, TT's picture is a swathe of orange that someone has drawn a beak and eyes onto, but no fcuking way is your bird "fast moving". It's stopped. Totally. It could almost be dead.

was fast moving.

(Plus: Snort at Stuart).

Yeah, I bet D's bird had been sat there for hours, chilling. No wind, perfect sunlight...

Ideal conditions actually.

Only way it could have been easier if it had flown down and landed in an actual photography studio and took directions on how to pose.

You’re both completely wrong. If you knew anything about keeping wild parakeets, which you don’t, you would know that they are never ever still. Even in that photo, it was making ready to drop the hammer and drag race the other two off their perches.

Idiots.

Just confirming your ignorance here I’m afraid Greg66. Parakeets are of course not known as hummingbirds at all because hummingbirds are. Your cheap attempts at misdirection and distraction haven’t gone unnoticed.

RSPB Card: revoked. The Young Ornithologists Club will just have to manage with your’input’.

Obviously they are blurry and indistinct, but if you zoom in on the bird's 'feet' you can just make out that they are in fact cable ties.

I expect the politics of envy to power Greg66 moogs, but I would never have put you down as the type to jealously attack my property like this.

First youtube video I came across on ring necked parakeets shows them to be the laziest most sedentary bird that has ever lived.
I reckon I could take a better picture than yours with a pinhole camera.
For a moment I thought I had accidentally clicked on a photograph rather than a video

I know nothing of photography and can barely tell one end of a camera from the other - so I'm ideally placed to step in and judge this, you're most welcome.

I liked Dis' picture, I found the subject matter intriguing and the composition pleasing.
