go to the garage where it was last tested is the easiest way, but you should now be able to get a copy from any testing station if you take the V5 along (they use the reference number on there). maximum fee for a replacement certificate is a tenner. Worst comes to worst give VOSA a ring and they should be able to sort it for you.

Well you can allways start a tax disc renewal on-line, that will tell you if you still have a vaid one or not.
If not look though your bank statments to see when you paid for it.

The other way is direct with the VOSA website

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/html/home.html

This service enables you to

Confirm that an MOT Certificate is a genuine record of that stored on the MOT Computerisation database

Check the status of a vehicle that has undergone a recent MOT Test

View the MOT Test history of a vehicle. (This only relates to MOT Tests conducted on a vehicle since the introduction of MOT Computerisation).
What you will need
Before you can access the information from the MOT Computerisation database you will need the following:

The vehicle registration mark from the number plate
And EITHER

The MOT test number from the VT20 MOT Test Certificate or VT30 Refusal of an MOT Certificate
OR

The document reference number from the V5C Registration Certificate issued by the DVLA (http://www.dvla.gov.uk.)
