Request for authorisation

Post by Tumescent Acorn @ Tue Feb 05, 2013 4:47 pm

Here is a thread TT shamed me in to starting.

Right, I think my credit card is being raped.

At a hotel in India, home of scams and scammers, and reception boy called up to my room and asked if he could take my credit card details again since he had forgotten them.
He did so, perhaps a mistake.
Then called 5 mins later to say his colleague had 'requested authorisation' for 90k rupees instead of 9k, and is that alright ?

90k rupees is just over £1k, and I'm unlikely to get through that much toblerone from the mini bar.

Am I about to be fcuked over ?

No idea.
A request for authorisation doesnt actually charge money, but ringfences it. I think it happens for a period of time and then if they dont take the money it becomes un ring fenced.
Not sure what the relevance is.
Oh, I know what I was going to say, if it was a scam, why would they phone and tell you?
Presumably your options were either a) get them to cancel the request and put through a smaller one or b)Just leave it till you check out and they will cancell it then and charge you
Doesnt sounds scammy to me

Why are you in india? Where? Why?

I probably will, but I'm dead tired and also worried they'll over-react and cancel my card with some lame promise of a replacement.

I was hoping somone might enlighten me as to what a 'request for authorisation' actually was, ie is reception boy now scoring some drugs and hiring a dusky maiden as I type ?

I suspect a scam - I reckon they know you'll get a call from the bank to authorise the request and by pre-empting this, they hope you'll say to the bank that it's OK and to go ahead.

A normal hotel would cancel the transaction and put through the correct amount.

It gives them the right to charge your card to a particular limit without reverting to you or your card provider. Think of it as the equivalent of taking a print of your card (as they did in the old days) and holding it as security so that they could charge if they wanted.

I would be asking your hotel to cancel the authorisation and do it properly...

I want to ride about the Himalayas on a Royal Enfield. That proves I am not racist. Yes yes yes someone will get kicked to death but that's normal over there.

That was my understanding too. I don't believe either of us.

As a back door route to get card details whilst away from eyes of manager or front desk CCTV etc ?

Today Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai before that.
Recruiting international students and a visit to a guy I collaborate with.

I don't think you'd like it here. They are either really really pov or much richer than you. No one in between.
The academics and the students are really genuine and nice people. Everyone else is trying to take your money, one way or another... and it's fcuking tiresome.

I think you've been scammed.

Remember, £1,000 to those fellows is like a billion pounds to the likes of us. They would probably kill you for 20p.
