Isn't is "just"?

I can't think of any cover versions I like more than the original.

I can

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
Tainted Love - Soft Cell - (Gloria Jones)
Nothing Compares 2 U - Skinhead O'Connor (The Family/Prince)
Emma - Sisters of Mercy (Hot Chocolate - but love their original too)

Loads more too probably that I can't remember right now.

And in how many of those cases did you hear the cover version first minimog?

Well I definitely heard Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" before Marilyn Manson's, and I prefer the latter.

Two. Let me guess - your point was going to be the one you hear first gets ingrained as your favourite, never to be usurped in your affections, right?

I think that is what often happens, not universal though

Couldn't believe this one when i first heard it:

Lovefool

Done by teeny punk poppers New Found Glory.

Oddly, the original is a bit of a guilty pleasure and I'm amazed at how they've managed to turn it into a sanitised, American high school anthem (which even more oddly, I hate less the more I hear it). Bro.

Dude, that's frikkin awful man.

Made even more so by the very obvious fact that ALL the songs from then that also come up on that YouTube page are dire cover versions.

All I can confidently say is that I don't hate it. I really like the original though and thought I would loathe this...

I don't know if this counts as a cover version. It's whatever the young kids call it when two songs are seamlessly blended:
GnR and Jackson 5

I can think of several, original artist / title in parentheses:

Strawberry Switchblade - Sunday Morning (Velvet Underground)
Madness - It must be love (Labi Siffre)
Lick the tins - Can't help falling in love (Elvis ?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDGevgo_E1U
Jennifer Warnes - First we take Manhattan (Leonard Cohen)
Mary Coughlan - A thrill's a thrill (Long John Baldry)
Mike Oldfield - Platinum IV (Philip Glass, original title North Star)
Mark Shreeve - Assassin (John Carpenter, originally the theme music to Assault on Precinct 13) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s54kYAVdVjc
and Soft Cell as previously mentioned. I really never got Northern Soul.

If it had been anyone other than Dionne Warwick singing the original then The stranglers would have managed it as well.
