We’re off to see Alabama 3 in Brighton tonight. Not seen them before but should be a great night.

What concerts do you have planned?

We’ve got a who are you going to see list somewhere though not just for live music.

Levellers acoustic gig coming up, it was postponed for a couple of months as the drummer’s son got hit and killed by a bus !

Within Temptation later in the year.

Nightwish have just announced some UK shows so I’ll probably go to one.

Swimming Tapes next month in Brighton. Ticks all the boxes for me, band on the up, small room, fiver a ticket. I come out in hives if I have to spend eighty quid to stand in some soulless cavernous hangar with thousands of other people & watch a band on jumbotrons because they're half a mile away.

I'm with you. I much prefer small venues. Saw Numan at the Middlesbrough Empire, and was prolly no more than fifteen metres away from the whole band. Thirty quid. Didn't buy his merch, though; got the support band's shirt instead (Nightmare Air). Numan wanted 65 quid for a hoodie!

I haven't been to a gig for years, but I'm definitely in this camp too.

I once saw GWAR at Newcastle Riverside for about £5. I was so close to the 'action' I had to throw my clothes away afterwards because so much of the performance got on me.

Horses for courses. If you're into The Stones, Foos etc. you don't really have much of a choice. Luckily for me, being a wet blanket indie fan gives all sorts of opportunities to see bands for peanuts. Often as not, you get to have a beer with a fair few of them too. It's a decent scene in that sense.

A few highlights would be chewing the fat with Bernard Butler in his Trans EP shows, KT Tunstall for £2 the week after she'd been on Jools Holland, C Duncan for £3, Ex-Magician a few times, ending up on a pub crawl with those boys last time they were in town & The Bluetones which ended with a few of us partying in their hotel & kipping on their floor for the night . Happy days.

Vee gee, vee gee. Not very loud, which was surprising. But then the gig I was at previous was Mastodon in Newcastle, which was very loud indeed.

Well, Alabama 3 were superb. Must see them again some time.

Regarding prices, the £20 for last night and similar when we saw Royal Trux at the same place, The Concord 2 on the beach in Brighton, really doesn’t seem bad value. They also had some rather cool T shirts too for 20 notes.

I love that room. Apart from the poles holding up the ceiling, obvs. Great place to see a band.

I went to see Turin Brakes last night.

My mother has listened to them since their first album back in about 2001, originally because one of the two main guys in the group is the nephew of one of her oldest friends. She's never seen them live though and as my stepdad is away this weekend I went along to watch them with her at Pontardawe Arts Centre (where I'll also be going to see Public Service Broadcasting in a couple of weeks).

She had a great time. It all lacked a bit of attack and bite for my preference but I'm glad she enjoyed it.

had a great time watching Public Service Broadcasting last night. It was a full house of 450 and a great atmosphere as they played a lot of Every Valley as well as tunes like Go!, Spitfire, Night Mail, Everest and others from their other two albums on a warm-up tour for a big night in the Royal Albert Hall.

I saw Royal Blood at Ally Pally a few months ago, but I just cannot get up the enthusiasm for live gigs any more. It’s all just so much hassle.

I think my fave live gig ever was seeing Pavement at the Zodiac in Oxford when I was a student.

I’d forgotten about this.

I went to see Wolf Alice at the Roundhouse a couple of weeks ago. Shortish set but VG.

The support band were the Idles. Who were just terrible awful. A sort of thrash metal meets onanism meets guitar frenzy meets 17 on a 1 to 10 volume scale. Really quite an unpleasant assault on the ears.

Made me think though that if the Wolf Alice boys hadn’t found Ellie Rowsell that’s what they’d be.

I saw Soul II Soul the other night. Karen Wheeler’s voice has lost its power but Jazzie B was better than ever and it was great.

I saw Pavement support Sonic Youth once, many years ago. I love Pavement and they were great. Nowhere near my favourite gig though.

This year I saw theThe live at the Royal Albert Hall, it was absolutely brilliant. If you get a chance to see any of the shows this year, please go. I saw U2 last week in O2 in London, was brilliant, and was right at the front.

He can certainly play.

I bought one of their albums on the strength of an interview and small demo and was pretty disappointed when I first got it. The more I persevered, the more it grew on me, and now I actually like it.

Off to see Within Temptation again in a couple of weeks, one of the support acts is this lot which appeal to 1980's long-haired me.
