I’m making another beetroot and onion allotment soup today. The last one I made was even better cold the next day than it was when I had I had it hot as soon as I made it. Cold soup really hits the spot on a hot day.

I/we hosted our first dinner party since my prolonged vacation last weekend and it went incredibly well.
Obv I wasn't nervous about my social skills but culinary are a bit rusty, especially for a group.
I turned out starter and main that went down very well and my wife baked a fabulous choc cake.

So Saturday night is Indian night at ours this weekend. A beef Mossaman is going into slow cooker soon plus a chicken Jalfrezi, guests are bringing Biryani, breads, etc.
It will probably be chaos.

Moogs contribution has put everything pineapple and milky into second place.

That truly is unbelievably appalling.

I am well loving pea shoots at the moment! Pea shoot salad in my lunch wrap with some nice ham and a mild touch of mustard is proper!

Oh, also: do you eat the stem from broccoli? When I'm doing a roast and cut the broccoli for streaming, I'm left with the chunky stem - which I then just munch on raw and eat while I'm prepping other veg. Yum!

Alternatively I'll cut the stem like carrots and stream it with the rest, but I prefer it raw. Does anybody else do this?

I like the stem left in, and then it's only just cooked when the floret is all tender. Delicious.

I made a tiger prawn stir fry for lunch today (one of the few upsides to being a dole bludger is that you can cook properly at lunchtime).

I didn't have any sauce so I made one from garlic, fresh ginger, nam pla fish sauce, soy sauce, and black pepper. I whizzed the garlic and ginger up in the herb mill of my blender to get it nice and fine. half a dozen big fresh tiger prawns (I love cooking prawns; it's just magic how they go pink) and then the vegetables.

Added bok choi, edamamememe beans, spring onions, carrot, a little bit of red onion.

A few straight-to-wok noodles and bob's your uncle, a healthy and tasty lunch. Lots of vegetables, some fish, very little fat.

I cheat a little bit and use "stir fry oil" from the supermarket - it's sesame oil with ginger and garlic in it.

Not raw but yes I do. Keep the stem and dice it to add to stir fries. Broccoli is one of my favourite veggies. Broccoli!

re. pea shoots a few years back I grew my own. Very easy and I got two harvests from them before the soil went in the compost. I forgot all about it until you just mentioned them.

I made Gordon Ramsays shepherds pie yesterday, it's fab.

Mince with Carrots, Onions, Mushrooms, tomato paste, red wine, salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, stock.

Mashed potatoes mixed with some butter and milk that I had simmered with garlic, rosemary and thyme (strained), an egg yolk and a little parmesan over the top to crisp up the top a bit.

I too have made that recipe and yes, it's great.

I was looking forward to a burger tonight, made some nice chips, had burger buns, nice cheese to melt over the top.

Except when the burger was cooking it wasn't really looking like a burger.

See:

Image

Also the texture felt a bit... odd... Not really like meat.

So I stabbed it. I at least wanted to know if it wasn't a burger was it at least cooked in the middle, and.... a white sauce ran out. It was a fish cake.

Still, fish cake burger it is then.

It was weird.

I learned two things tonight:
1) Fishcakes aren't burgers
2) Label your food.

Well... They are both disc shaped.

And I assumed disc shaped meant burger.

Should have known from the colour.

I think I might have eaten tripe recently. I went to a Chinese place where actual real-life Chinese people eat and had the special chow mein, which has bits of everything in it. On the menu Ox Tripe seemed to feature quite heavily and some of the white bits in the noodles might well have been tripe. If they were tripe then tripe tastes quite nice.

Roffle at Stuart’s fishcakeburger!

Reminds me a bit of offering to make Mr C a bacon sandwich with what I thought was bacon wrapped in foil in the freezer. It turned out to be a sea bass fillet. He was pretty disappointed.
